Tribs split with the Terriers

ROCHESTER, NY — A trio of pitchers combined on a five-hit shutout as the Monroe Community College Tribunes defeated the Ontario Terriers, 4-0 in Sunday’s opener of a non-conference twin bill at the Henrietta, New York campus.

Tyler Wilson (Pittsford, NY/Mendon) hurled four and two-thirds for the win. The right-hander struck out five while walking two and hitting one batter. The sophomore worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the third with a strike out.

Nate Harris (Pittsford, NY/McQuaid) came on with the bases loaded in the fifth and struck out the first batter he faced on three pitches. Harris tossed a scoreless sixth inducing one of two double plays turned by the Tribune infield on the game.

Cody Petre (Letchworth, NY/ Letchworth) threw a scoreless seventh. The southpaw nearly getting out of the inning on just eight pitches until a play was botched at first base.

Monroe got all the runs it needed in the second. With one out, Frank Poerio (Gibsonia, PA/Hampton) reached and advanced to second on an errant throw. After a stolen base, Poerio came home on a sacrifice fly by Spencer Scorza (Penfield, NY/ Penfield).

The Tribunes added three in the third. Bobby Frantz (Webster, NY/Thomas) doubled down the line in left and scored on a Danny Mendick (Pittsford, NY/ Mendon) single.  Vinny Bomasuto (Dunkirk, NY/Dunkirk) put runners on second and third with a double into left field. Ralph Alloco (Rochester, NY/McQuaid) loaded the bases with a walk.  Mendick and Bomasuto came home when a ground ball by Brad Kaczka (Pittsford, NY/Sutherland) was mishandled.

Wilson improved to 2-2 with the win. He fanned the first two he faced and set down eight of nine to start the game.

Ontario scored single runs in the fourth and fifth for a 2-1 victory in the night cap.

Aaron Loder (Guelph,ONT) led the fourth with a single. After a stolen base, Loder moved to third on a fly ball to right.  He scored on a ground ball by Zackary Sardellitti (Maple, ONT).

In the fifth, Zackary Choy (Mississauga, ONT) opened the frame with a base hit.  Turner Spears (Guelph, ONT) moved the runner with a sacrifice bunt. A Robert Grilli (Mississauga, ONT) single to left accompanied by an error brought home the unearned run.

Alloco plated Frantz with a two-out single in the sixth.

MCC looked poised for another walk off triumph. Kaczka and Jalen Dennis (Rochester, NY/ Aquinas) led the seventh with back-to-back singles.  Brad McDonald (Rochester, NY/ Greece Olympia) moved the tying and winning run into scoring position, but the Tribs failed to take advantage.

Steve Stoklosa (Victor, NY/McQuaid) struck out four and walked none over four-plus innings.

Jon Klein (Cheektowaga,NY/Cheektowaga) threw an inning and two-thirds.

Bomasuto worked a scoreless inning.

The Tribune nine scored three in its final at bat to defeat Alfred State, Saturday.

Monroe is 15-17 on the season.

The Tribs travel to Genesee on Thursday to take on the GCC Cougars. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. The Cougars come to MCC, Saturday. Again, a 1 p.m. first pitch is scheduled.
