The 2012 Atlantic 10 tournament quarterfinals kick off with a #4/#5 match up between the St. Joseph’s Hawks and Richmond Spiders.  Pickin’ Splinters is court side bringing you scores, stats, analysis, insights – we might even get a quote or two from players or coaches.

#5 St. Joseph’s (20-9/9-5) vs. #4 Richmond (22-7/9-5)

The Spiders won the only meeting this year: 78-59 at the  on January 18, 2012. St. Joseph’s leads the head to head series 8-5. The Hawks have a 4-2 record in the series at home.

    Liz Brown picked up her second foul early and will have to sit.

    Early stat, Richmond has 6 second chance points to St. Joe’s 0. Then again, the Hawks are shooting 67% from the field. Not many second chances to be had.

    In the last 4 minutes, Richmond has had 4 turnovers.

    Saint Joseph’s has 4 assists on 7 field goals. Sharing the rock.

    At the 7:30 mark, the Spiders have 9 fouls and the Hawks have just 5.

    The Spiders with 6 turnovers have led to 6 of Hawks 27 points.

    Hawks lead, 27-19.

    As a team, Richmond shot close to 40% from behind the 3 point line during the season.

    So far in the first half, they are 0% (0 for 4).

    Hawks 38-27.

    Halftime and Saint Joseph’s leads 42-33.

    Richmond is currently out-rebounding SJU 25-17 and has 12 offensive rebounds.

    The Hawks on the other hand are shooting 50% from the field. They have assisted on 6 of their 14 field goals.

    Hawks have 7 blocks.

    Michelle Baker has 13 points for the Hawks.

    Gen Okoro has 11 points for the Spiders.

    Richmond looks like they are finding their rhythm after having a week off. A 9-0 run to start to second half has tied the game up at 42.

    Hawks timeout.

    We have a ballgame!!

    Richmond now has 15 offensive rebounds.

    That is how you shoot 40% from the field and stay in the game.

    SJU leads 48-45.

    Basketball is a game of runs.

    Richmond started the second half with a 9-0 run. St. Joe’s has responded with a 10-4 run of their own and now lead 52-46.

    There is a combined 9 fouls less than 9 minutes into second half. Teams will be shooting FTs for most of the second half.

    Over the last 4 minutes, Richmond has gone just 1 for 6 from the floor . SJU on the other hand is 2 for 8.

    SJU leads 56-48 with 7:58 to play.

    Spiders point guard Abby Oliver entered the game averaging 17.1 ppg.

    With 5:33 to go in the game, she has been shutout (0 for 9).

    Saint Joseph’s defeats Richmond 69-57.

    The Hawks will take on St. Bonaventure tomorrow at noon.
