SPRINGFIELD, MA — Iona College senior guard Scott Machado has been selected as the 2011-2012 Pepsi Max MAAC Player of the Year by the MAAC’s head coaches.
Machado, a 6-foot-1, 180-pound senior guard from Queens, N.Y., is also a two-time member of the All-MAAC First Team. A finalist for the Bob Cousy Collegiate Point Guard of the Year award, he leads the nation in assists with 10.1 a night for the Gaels, while adding 13.1 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. Machado is shooting 47.7 percent from the field, 40.2 percent from three-point range and 80.5 percent from the free throw line stripe. Named MAAC Player of the Week four times this season, he posted double digits in 22 games and 11 double-doubles during the regular season as well as his first career triple-double on Feb. 12.
Machado is the fifth player in Iona history to win the MAAC’s Player of the Year honor joining Steve Burtt (1983 and 1984), Mindaugus Timinskas (1997), Kashif Hameed (1998) and Tariq Kirksay (2000).
The Gaels open the 2012 MAAC Championship on Saturday (Mar. 3) in the quarterfinal round against the winner of the opening round matchup between Marist and Saint Peter’s. Tipoff is slated for 4:30 pm on ESPN3.
