In a game that featured three large runs, Temple got the upper hand by reeling off an 18-6 run to open the game and a 28-5 run to open the second half. A crowd of 2,230 was on hand to witness Temple’s performance as elementary school students from around the area came for the annual “School Day” game.
Two early treys from Lewis and a third from Peddy highlighted the Owls’ opening run, giving them a 12-point lead less than seven minutes into the game, but then the shots stopped falling for Temple.
GW exploded for a 13-0 run to take a 19-18 lead with nine minutes left in the half, and the Colonials went on to lead by as many as six. Trailing 32-26 just under the three-minute mark after a three-pointer from GW’s Booker, the Owls got the only two buckets in the remaining time to go into the break down only two points, 32-30.
The Colonials ended the first half shooting 50 percent despite struggling early, while the Owls shot just 33.3 percent. Temple dominated on the glass with 24 rebounds to GW’s 13, but earned only a 9-5 advantage in second-chance points.
Peddy scored seven points in the opening minutes of the second half to help Temple take a 40-36 lead, and after a single free throw by the Colonials it was all Owls from there.
Five different players scored in an 18-0 run over a six-minute span that put the game out of reach for GW, and the run would end up at 28-5 from the beginning of the second half until the 8:07 mark.
Temple held the Colonials without a field goal for a 10-minute span from 16:00 to 6:01, by which time the Owls had built a 23-point lead. The largest margin of the game was 25 points after a fastbreak layup from Peddy on an assist from Brown just after the five-minute mark.
The Owls are on the road this weekend, traveling to Rhode Island for a 1:00 p.m. game on Sunday, Feb. 19. Temple has just one home game remaining as the Owls celebrate Senior Night against Saint Joseph’s on Wednesday, Feb. 22 at 7:00 p.m. in McGonigle Hall.
