KINGSTON, R.I. – On the strength of a career-high 27 points from senior Tyeasha Moss, the Xavier women’s basketball claimed the 67-57 win over Rhode Island Saturday afternoon at URI’s Ryan Center. The win snaps the Musketeers’ 11-game losing streak and puts XU in the win column in Atlantic 10 play for the first time this season.
Xavier improves to 4-15 on the season and 1-5 in league action while Rhode Island falls to 1-20 overall and 0-6 in A-10 games.
Moss was 11-of-22 from the floor and went 3-of-7 from long range, grabbed four rebounds and dished out three assists. Also for the Musketeers, junior Jessica Pachko scored 14 points on 6-of-7 shooting and grabbed four rebounds while Ashley Wanninger added nine points and three rebounds. Freshman Lakeisha Crouch equaled her career-high seven points.
The Musketeers shot 49.0 percent from the floor and 90.9 percent from the line for the game while the Rams 46.8 percent and 84.6 percent. Xavier won the battle of the boards, 29-25, and committed a season-low 10 turnovers while dishing out 11 assists.
After a jumper by Moss at the 15:31 mark, the Musketeers held their largest lead of the game at 13 points. The Rams put together a 9-2 run capped by a layup from Sherrie Session to pull within three, 49-46, at the 7:41 mark. Xavier was able to pull away late on the strength of back-to-back 3-point baskets from Moss with just over three minutes left in the game.
Heading to the locker room at halftime, the Musketeers held their largest intermission lead of the season at 11, 34-23. XU shot a blistering 50.0 percent from the floor and was a perfect 7-of-7 from the line in the first frame. Moss led all scorers during the first 20 minutes with 11 points while Pachko also posted double-figures with 10.
The Rams were led by Ashley Rivera with 19 points and four assists and Emilie Cloutier with 12 points and a game-high six rebounds.
Up next for the Musketeers is a Wednesday night match-up against Saint Louis on Feb. 1. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at XU’s Cintas Center.
