BRONX, NY – Behind a balanced scoring attack, the Charlotte 49ers (13-7, A-10: 5-1) ran past Fordham (10-11, A-10: 1-5), 61-41, on the road.
“Overall it was a good road performance by our team tonight,” Charlotte coach Cara Consuegra said. “Jennifer Hailey recorded another double-double. Amanda Dowe with another double-figure rebounds performance. Epiphany Woodson played well and carried us offensively during a stretch of the second half. I am just pleased with our effort and performance tonight.”
Epiphany Woodson recorded her 16th double-figure scoring game of the season with 14 points off the bench. Woodson scored 10 of her 14 points in the second half. Jennifer Hailey recorded her ninth double-double of the season and the 17th of her career with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Nine 49ers scored in the game.
Charlotte finished the game with a 41-31 rebounds advantage. Amanda Dowe led the 49ers with 11 rebounds for her fourth straight double-figure rebounds game. Hailey recorded her 10th double-figure rebounds game with 10 boards. Ten 49ers grabbed at least one rebound in the game.
Charlotte behind the scoring of Woodson enjoyed a 27-11 advantage in bench points.
Charlotte scored nine of the game’s first 11 points taking a 9-2 lead at the 13:55 mark. Hailey scored seven of Charlotte’s first nine points.
The 49ers enjoyed their largest lead of the first half when Jai Forney knocked down a baseline jump shot with 1:54 on the clock giving the 49ers a 26-14 lead. Fordham cut the 49ers lead to nine points when Abigail Corning connected on a three at the 1:25 mark. Amanda Dowe gave the 49ers a 28-17 halftime lead with a jump shot in the lane at the 1:09 clock.
Early in the second half, Fordham connected on two straight threes cutting the 49ers lead to 28-23 at the 17:45 mark. Then, the 49ers behind the scoring of Ayanna Holmes, Forney, Hailey and Woodson went on a 10-0 run over the next four minutes taking a 38-23 lead at the 13:41 mark.
Fordham cut the 49ers to 10 points, 40-30, at the 11:24 mark but that would be as close as they would get to Charlotte. Katie Meador, who scored six points off the bench including the 49ers only three of the game, gave Charlotte their largest lead, 59-34, after completing a three-point play with 3:18 on the clock.
Fordham scored seven of the game’s final nine points cutting Charlotte’s final margin of victory to 61-41. Charlotte’s Olivia Rankin saw her first action of the season and she connected on two free throws with 38 seconds left for her first two career points and the 49ers last two points of the game.
Charlotte concludes their two-game A-10 road swing when they travel to Philadelphia to play Temple, Sunday, January 29 at 2 pm in a game that will be nationally-televised on the CBS Sports Network.
