January 21, 2012 by Kyle Soppe Leave a Comment

PITTSBURGH – Wumi Agunbiade set a program record by going 10-for-10 from the field for 21 points and Orsi Szecsi added 20 as the Duquesne women’s basketball team defeated George Washington 76-50 on Saturday afternoon. Szecsi added 11 rebounds for her second-career double-double. Carly Vendemia scored 12 off the bench.

With the victory, the Dukes improve to 14-5 overall and 2-2 in the Atlantic 10 Conference loop.

The Colonials (9-10, 2-3 A-10), who played with only seven players, were led by Megan Nipe who scored 14 off the bench.

Leading 20-16 midway through the first half, DU went on a 16-5 run to take a 36-21 advantage at the 5:56 mark. A jumper by GW’s Brooke Wilson trimmed the deficit to nine points with 2:05 remaining, but Duquesne’s defense would only allow one basket the rest of the half as they took a 44-29 lead into halftime.

The Dukes’ lead reached 21 points five minutes into the second half as Agunbiade’s layup made the score 52-31. DU’s lead would climb to 28 points right before the final media timeout on Agunbiade’s 10th field goal of the game, making the score 72-44.

With today’s win, Duquesne improved to 10-0 at home this season.

“Our players came out with a lot of energy and were aggressive defensively,” said head coach Suzie McConnell-Serio. “We did a good job at challenging shots and rebounding the basketball and taking away driving lanes.”

Duquesne forced 17 George Washington turnovers and out- rebounded GW 45-28.

“Alex [Gensler] did a great job distributing the ball today as well. She made some great passes into the post tonight.”

Gensler tied a career high with a game-high seven assists.

“The `Wo-Show’ really came to play today. It was a great effort by both Orsi and Wumi rebounding and scoring.”

The duo combined for 41 points and 18 rebounds.

“Carly is such an energy player for us, she had a great game with 12 off the bench. When she gets in the game, we want to get her the basketball.”

Vendemia was 4-of-6 from the floor and added seven rebounds.

The Dukes stay at home for a Wednesday night game against Massachusetts (6-13, 1-3 A-10). Tipoff is at 7:00 p.m.
