DAYTON, Ohio – The Seton Hall University Pirates prevailed over the University of Dayton Flyers 69-64 on Wednesday night at UD Arena. The Pirates used a hot shooting start from beyond the arc to hold off the Flyers.
Seton Hall converted eight of its first 11 shots from three-point range and made 8-of-16 overall.
The main difference maker in the game was Seton Hall 6-9 sophomore Patrick Auda, who scored 18 points, 16 in the second half. He converted 7-of-10 shots from the field, including 2-of-3 from beyond the arc. Pirates’ star, Herb Pope, who came into the game averaging 22.1 points and 11.8 rebounds per game, finished with 14 points and nine rebounds.
Seton Hall took at 34-31 lead into the locker room at halftime, with 27 of the 34 points coming from Pope, Jordan Theodore, and Aaron Cosby, who had nine points each. Josh Benson paced the Flyers in the first half with 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the floor. Benson finished the game with 14 points on 6-of-11 shooting and pulled down nine rebounds.
Senior Chris Johnson led the Flyers with 16 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field, including 3-of-5 shooting from the three. Johnson exited last game against Florida International with a hyperextended knee and was a game-time decision to play. Redshirt junior Kevin Dillard added 14 points.
UD was down 50-40 with 13:32 left when Pope picked up his third foul on an and-one by junior Matt Kavanaugh. The Flyers went on a 16-6 run from that point to tie the score at 56 with 6:43 left in the game. Seton Hall re-took control of the game with three consecutive lay-ups, one by Cosby and two by Fuquan Edwin to push the Seton Hall lead to 64-58 with 3:56 remaining.
Overall, UD shot 22-of-53 from the field (41.5%), 5-of-18 from the three (27.8%) and 15-of-22 from the foul line (68.2%). The Flyers converted just 1-of-6 foul shots in the first half, but hit 14-of-16 in the second half.
The Flyers are back in action on Friday against the University of Illinois-Chicago Flames at UD Arena. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.
