Cormier Earns MAAC Player Of The Week Nod

December 13, 2011 by Paul Gotham Leave a Comment

EDISON, N.J. – Loyola University Maryland sophomore guard Dylon Cormier (Baltimore, Md./Cardinal Gibbons High School) averaged 20.5 points in a pair of Greyhounds victories last week, and he was honored by the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference today as the league’s Player of the Week.

Cormier is averaging 17.9 points and 5.0 rebounds through nine games, helping the Greyhounds to the program’s best start since Loyola joined NCAA Division I in 1981-1982. After falling in the season-opener at Wake Forest, the Greyhounds have won their next eight.

The Baltimore native opened last week with a career-high 26 points and nine rebounds in a 65-55 victory against the Atlantic 10 Conference’s George Washington University.

Cormier made 7-of-13 field goals and finished 10-of-13 at the free-throw line, eclipsing his career-best of 22 that he set just four days prior in a MAAC victory at Siena. His nine rebounds were also the most of his career, and he led the Greyhounds with four assists.

He followed that performance with 15 points as Loyola defeated Mount St. Mary’s University, 65-54, on Saturday in Emmitsburg, Md. Twelve of his points came in the first half as he scored the Greyhounds’ first seven points and 10 of their initial 14.

The award is the first of Cormier’s career. He was named the MAAC Rookie of the Week once last season. This year, Cormier leads Loyola in scoring, 3-point percentage (.452) and steals (1.9).

He will be off with the rest of the Greyhounds this week as Loyola students take final exams. They will return to the court on Sunday, December 18, at 2 o’clock when St. Bonaventure University hosts Loyola in Olean, N.Y.
