WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Freshman Kendall Anthony poured in a career-high 21 points to lead Richmond to a 70-62 win over Wake Forest in Winston Salem on Saturday. The Spiders’ win, now its third straight, marks the program’s third-ever victory in 21 visits to Wake and its first in Lawrence Joel Coliseum.
Anthony, who has scored in double-figures in seven of eight games this season, went 6-for-11 from the field and 7-for-9 from the line en route to recording his game-high 21 points. With his showing, he becomes just the second Spider freshman to score 21 points at Wake after Dan Geriot accomplished the feat as a freshman in 2006.
Sophomore Cedrick Lindsay, who handed out a career-high seven assists, came up just two points shy of another personal best with his 15 points on an efficient 5-for-6 shooting from the floor and 4-for-5 showing from the line, while classmate Derrick Williams also finished in double figures with 12 points. He and senior Francis-Cedric Martel each pulled down a game-high eight rebounds.
Richmond (6-2) shot nearly 50 percent from the field with its 22-for-45 (48.9 percent) shooting on the afternoon, including 58.8 percent in the second half, while going 7-for-16 (43.8 percent) from behind the arc. The team was sent to the line 25 times in the contest, finishing 19-for-25 (76 percent).
The Spiders were also solid on the other end, forcing the Demon Deacons (5-3) into 14 turnovers while allowing just one long-range attempt and failing to send them to the line in the opening half. The Spiders also racked up six blocks in the win, five of which came from senior Darrius Garrett.
Richmond led by as many as 23 points in the second half and has now led from start to finish in five of its six victories this season.
The Spiders return to the court on Friday when they visit cross-town rival VCU for the annual Farm Bureau Insurance Black & Blue Classic. The game will be carried live on ESPN2 at 8 p.m.
