DAYTON TAKES ON BC EAGLES
The University of Dayton (3-3) hosts Boston College in its second home game of the season. UD is coming off a 2-1 trip to the World Vision Classic in Storrs, Conn. The Flyers earned wins against Buffalo and Fairleigh Dickinson, but lost to No. 2 UConn in the championship game.
FLYER FACTS
The game against UConn marked the 700th in Head Coach Jim Jabir’s career. He is the all-time women’s basketball wins leader at Dayton. Nine Flyers are averaging 5.8 points or more per game. Senior Justine Raterman leads the way with 10.3 ppg. Junior Olivia Applewhite leads the team on the boards with 5.7 rpg. She pulled down a career-high 18 rebounds against Fairleigh Dickinson in the UConn World Vision Classic. It is the 11th best all-time single-game rebounding performance in program history.
SCOUTING THE EAGLES
Boston College is 2-3 so far in their 2011-12 season. Last year the Eagles went 20-13 and 5-9 in the ACC. They made it to the third round of the WNIT before being knocked off by Virginia. The Eagles have two returning starters: junior guard Kerri Shields (6.2 ppg, 3.4 rpg) and sophomore forward Kristen Doherty (6.4 ppg, 5.0 rpg). Doherty led the team last season in steals (69). Sophomore forward Katie Zenevitch leads the team in points (10.6 ppg).The Eagles have added a pair of transfers: redshirt junior Alyssa Fressle (Colorado) who averages 6.6 ppg and redshirt sophomore Tessah Holt (Florida) who averages 6.4 ppg. BC is coming off a 58-50 loss to Wisconsin on Nov. 30. The Eagles’ two wins came against Fairleigh Dickinson, 68-57, in their season opener on Nov. 11 and against Bryant , 68-42, on Nov. 27. Boston College is 0-3 on the road so far this season.
SERIES STUFF
This will be the third meeting between Boston College and Dayton. The series is currently tied 1-1. Their last meeting was Jan. 3, 2011 in Chestnut Hill, Mass. The Flyers came away victorious 89-77, upsetting the No. 25 Eagles. Patrice Lalor scored 22 points, while Justine Raterman put up 21 points. This will be the first meeting at UD Arena.
LAST TIME OUT
When the Flyers stepped on the floor to take on Buffalo on Friday, Nov. 25 it was their first game in nine days – their last game was a 75-64 loss to Cincinnati on Nov. 16 at Fifth Third Arena. But Dayton did not show any rust. The offense clicked in a 94-74 win over Buffalo. The Flyers had a season-high 35 field goals made, 15 three-point field goals made, 26 assists and 15 steals. The 15 threes made, as well as the 42 attempts from behind the arc, are both UD program single-game records. The 15 converted treys is two better than the previous high of 13 the Flyers set last year against Minnesota on Nov. 21, 2010. The 42 attempts is 11 more than the previous UD record of 31 against St. John’s in 2003.
Dayton continued its balanced attack as 10 players scored for the Flyers, including four in double figures, in an 84-48 win over Fairleigh Dickinson in UD’s second game of the World Vision Classic. The Flyers met their match in the championship game, falling to No. 2/2 Connecticut 78-38. De’Sarae Chambers and Cassie Sant each scored eight points to pace the Flyers.
UP NEXT
Dayton will host Wright State University at UD Arena Tuesday, Dec. 6. Game time is set for 7 p.m. ET at UD Arena. The Flyers beat the Raiders last season in an impressive 91-61 performance at the Nutter Center. Then the UD women will be on the road again as they take part in the Las Vegas Holiday Hoops competing against Illinois on Dec. 20 and Gonzaga on Dec. 21. And then the Flyers take part in the Saint Peter’s College Holiday Classic in Jersey City, N.J. Dec. 29-30.
