FORT MYERS, Fla. — Richmond fell to Florida Gulf Coast, 81-67, Friday night at Alico, Arena in Fort Myers, Fla.
Richmond fell to 4-1 on the season, while FGCU improved to 3-1.
The Eagles never trailed and scored the game’s first seven points, before Richmond got on the board after a Liz Brown layup five minutes into the contest.
The Eagles led by 12 at half, 48-36, and scored 22 first-half points in the paint. FGCU went to the line 15 times in the firstframe, scoring 14 points off free tosses. The nation’s leading three-point scoring team last season shot 40 percent from behind the arc and 60 percent from the field in the game’s first half.
Florida Gulf Coast led by as many as 20, but Richmond clawed back to a 69-56 deficit with 6:38 left after a Genevieve Okoro layup. In this span, the Spiders went on a 9-0 run started by A-10 Player of the Week Rachael Bilney’s jumper.
The Eagles responded with a 6-0 run of their own to push the advantage back to 75-56 with 3:42 left.
Sarah Hansen paced the Eagles with 20 first-half points, but was held scoreless in the second half. FGCU got 19 points at the foul line, and had four in double-figures.
Richmond was paced by Abby Oliver‘s 17 tallies, and Miah Register added 13. The Spiders went a season-high 20-for-23 from the charity stripe.
The Spiders host East Tennessee State Monday at 7 p.m. Oliver will be honored for scoring her 1,000th point in a pregame ceremony.
