Brooklyn, NY — Three 49ers in double-figures was not enough as the Charlotte 49ers (5-1) suffered their first loss of the season with an 81-72 setback at Long Island (3-1) in the Courtyard LaGuardia Turkey Classic.
“I was disappointed with our effort today,” Charlotte coach Cara Consuegra said. “You have to give credit to Long Island for their play today. We battled back at the end of the game but it was too little too late.”
Epiphany Woodson led the 49ers with her sixth straight double-figure scoring game with 21 points. Woodson connected on five threes in the game. Jennifer Hailey finished the game with 14 points and seven rebounds. Jai Forney scored 12 points and grabbed six rebounds. Paige McCallum scored nine points.
Charlotte began the game by scoring 11 of the game’s first 16 points taking an 11-6 lead when Woodson knocked down a jump shot at the 15:36 mark.
Charlotte maintained a lead of 2-5 points for the next seven minutes until Long Island went on a 14-2 run taking a 28-20 lead at the 4:29 mark.
The 49ers closed out the half on an 11-0 run taking a 31-28 halftime lead after Woodson connected on a jumper with 53 seconds on the clock. Gabby Tyler, McCallum and Forney also scored during the 49ers’ run.
At the start of the second half, Charlotte’s Hailey scored inside giving the 49ers a 33-28 lead just 18 seconds into the second half.
Long Island scored six straight points taking a 34-33 lead at the 17:56 mark. Then, a three by Woodson and basket by Hailey gave the 49ers a 38-34 lead just 49 seconds later.
At the 16:13 mark, Woodson connected on a long three giving the 49ers their final lead 41-38.
