CANCUN, Mexico – Sophomore Darien Brothers scored a career-high 22 points, but Illinois held off Richmond 70-61 in the Cancun Challenge Tuesday at the Moon Palace Resort.
The Spiders had a rough first half, shooting just 23.8 percent from the field and trailing by 18 at the break. But Richmond came out energized in the second half, closing the gap to five and leaving the final outcome in doubt until the final minute.
Brothers scored in double-figures for the third-straight game, making 7-of-12 field goals and 6-of-9 three-pointers.
Sophomore Cedrick Lindsay scored 11 points, had six rebounds and four assists. Freshman Kendall Anthony scored in double-figures for the fifth-straight game to start his career, also scoring 11.
Senior Darrius Garrett blocked seven shots as he moved into sole possession of third on Richmond’s all-time career list for blocks with 142. Garrett needs 41 blocks to set the school record.
Richmond will play in the consolation game of the Cancun Challenge on Wednesday at 7 p.m. ET in a game televised nationally on the CBS Sports Network.
