Richmond, VA – Women’s basketball head coach Michael Shafer announced the signing of guard Bria Powell (Virginia Beach, Va.) to a National Letter of Intent Tuesday.
“Bria is a versatile, athletic player,” said Shafer. “She will fit well into our style of play, as she can really defend and disrupt on the defensive end as well as attack on the offensive end. She is a good scorer who also passes the ball well and is very unselfish. We see her playing several guard positions for us and having a very good career at Richmond. Bria is a true student-athlete and will thrive at the University. We are all excited to have her join our program and the Richmond community.”
Powell, a 5’9 guard from Virginia Beach, Va., hails from Princess Anne High School. Powell won two state championships at Princess Anne (2009, 2011) and was a state runner-up in 2010. Powell was a second team All-Beach selection and a third-team All-Region honoree. Powell averaged 9.2 points per game, 3.4 rebounds per game and 3.1 assists her game her junior year.
Powell has amassed a staggering 91-4 record while at Princess Anne. Powell’s freshman year campaign ended in 31-1 record and state championship. Her sophomore year, the Cavaliers posted a 29-2 record and was a state finalist. Powell’s junior year mirrored her freshman campaign with a 31-1 record and state championship.
Powell has played on a variety of AAU teams, most notably the Maryland Terps this past fall. Powell has also played for the TYO Neptunes, BWSL 16U, BWSLU Nike Elite coached by Boo Williams and the previously mentioned Terps led at the helm by head coach Robert Hildreth. Freshman Liz Brown also played for the Terps and Hildreth.
Powell will join the Spiders in the fall of 2012.
