49ers Run Past Elon, 89-58, In Halton Arena
CHARLOTTE, NC – Behind five double-figure scorers and a 22-4 first half run, the Charlotte 49ers (4-0) ran past Elon (2-1), 89-58, in Halton Arena.
“It was overall a good team win,” Charlotte coach Cara Consuegra. “It was great having five players in double-figures. Paige McCallum had a solid all-around effort with a double-double. We did a good job rebounding tonight as well.”
Epiphany Woodson led the 49ers with 12 points. Woodson has scored in double-figures in all four of Charlotte’s games. Jennifer Hailey recorded her 24th career double-figure scoring game with 11 points. Ayanna Holmes recorded her second double-figure scoring game of the season with 11 points. Paige McCallum came off the bench to record her first career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Hillary Sigmon recorded her second double-figure scoring game of the season with 10 points off the bench. Every Niner that played in the game scored at least three points.
Charlotte behind the scoring of Sigmon and McCallum finished the game with a 44-15 advantage in bench points. Charlotte also finished the game with a 40-20 advantage in points in the paint. Charlotte, who only had a 25-16 first half rebounds advantage, finished the game with a 51-29 advantage on the boards. Every Niner that played grabbed at least one rebound led by McCallum’s 10 boards. Hailey and Amanda Dowe recorded seven rebounds apiece.
The 49ers had a lead of 2-4 points for the first six minutes of the game. With the 49ers leading 10-8 at the 14:56 mark, Elon scored five straight points taking a 13-10 lead with 13:33 on the clock. That would be Elon’s last lead of the game, as a three by Woodson and a three-point play by Gabby Tyler gave the 49ers a 16-13 lead with 12:31 on the clock.
Charlotte had a 25-19 lead with 8:45 on the clock, then the 49ers closed out the half on a 22-4 run. Katie Meador started the run with a three from the baseline. Jai Forney, Hailey, Holmes and Woodson scored during the 49ers’ run. Forney closed out the half’s scoring with a three from the wing with 27 seconds on the clock. Charlotte enjoyed a 47-23 halftime lead.
Elon began the second half by outscoring the 49ers, 16-12, over the first seven minutes cutting the 49ers lead to 58-39 when Zora Stephenson connected on a three at the 13:19 mark. Free throws by Meador and McCallum pushed the 49ers lead to 22.
With 6:44 on the clock, McCallum connected on a jump shot giving the 49ers an 80-50 lead. Dowe scored inside for the 49ers giving Charlotte their largest lead 83-50 at the 5:07 mark.
Elon cut Charlotte’s lead to 27 points, 83-56, at the 3:37 mark, the 49ers scored six of the game’s final eight points giving the 49ers an 89-58 win.
Charlotte will now play their next four games on the road beginning with a road game at VCU, Tuesday, November 22 at 7 pm.
