UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Richmond rolled to a 24-3 lead to open the night and never looked back in an 83-58 win over Sacred Heart in its second game of the Cancun Challenge on Saturday night at the Robins Center.
Derrick Williams posted 14 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the field and hauled in a game-high 11 rebounds for his first double-double of the season to lead the Spiders (3-1) to their third-consecutive home win.
Junior Darien Brothers broke out for a team-high 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting to go with a trio of steals and assists. Freshman Kendall Anthony finished with four from behind the arc in tallying 18 points and scoring in double figures for the fourth-straight game, while senior Josh Duinker was an efficient 5-of-6 from the field to end the night with 11 points.
After leading by nine points at the half, the Spiders pulled away after intermission and would lead by as many as many as 29 points down the stretch. Richmond shot 27-of-58 on the evening and finished with 11 three-pointers for the second-consecutive contest on 42 percent shooting from long range. The team held Sacred Heart to 37.5 percent shooting and just a pair of treys while outrebounding the Pioneers by a 37-35 margin.
Sacred Heart (2-2) was led by junior Shane Gibson’s game-high 26 points. Freshman Steve Glowiak secured seven points while junior Justin Swidowski added seven points and five boards for the Pioneers.
Richmond travels to Cancun next week to continue play in the Cancun Challenge. The Spiders will take on Illinois on Tuesday at 9:30 p.m. before facing either Rutgers or Illinois State on Wednesday.
