CHARLESTON, S.C. – Seton Hall defeated Saint Joseph’s, 78-70, in the semifinals of the DIRECTV Charleston Classic at the TD Arena. The loss ruined a career-high 38-point effort by Hawk junior Carl Jones, which was the record for the most points in a Charleston Classic game. The Pirates are 3-0 while SJU drops to 2-1.

The Hawks will now face Tulsa on Sunday, November 20 in the third-place game. The game will be televised on ESPNU at 6 p.m.

Jones, who scored 22 points in the first half alone, shot 12-for-17 from the field and 10-for-11 from the foul line, while going 4-for-6 from three-point range. It was the most points scored by a Hawk since Ahmad Nivins had 34 points vs. Duquesne on January 21, 2009. Jones saw his streak of 22 consecutive free throws end when he missed his last one with 35 seconds to play. It was his first miss of the season.

Jones got the Hawks started in the first half, scoring the team’s first seven points. SJU took its biggest lead of the game, 17-7, on a three by Jones at 12:19. The Hawks led the entire first half, and 39-32 at the intermission.

Seton Hall opened the second half with a quick 6-0 run and tied the game twice before taking its first lead, 49-47 at 14:25. The Hawks regained it, 55-52, on a three by Jones at 11:08, but Seton Hall would outscore the Hawks, 11-2, over the next five minutes to take a 63-57 lead. SJU would cut it to 63-59 on a pair of free throws by Jones, and came within 68-63 at 3:16, but could get no closer.

Ronald Roberts had 10 points for SJU and C.J. Aiken had nine points and four blocks.

Jordan Theodore had 18 for Seton Hall while Herb Pope and Fuquan Edwin each scored 17
