In the first half, the Hawks went on a six-minute scoring drought without a field goal beginning with just over nine minutes to play. Their next basket came at 3:25 on a three-pointer by freshman Chris Wilson. SJU then scored five more in a row to take a 23-22 lead with 1:30 remaining in the half.
“I thought we played skittish in the first half. We had too many inventions on offense. I didn’t think we had any rhythm or flow. In the second half we had a flow and only two turnovers. Our zone was good to us, but they did miss some shots, said coach Phil Martelli. “For November it certainly helps us keep building this team. We’re nowhere near done. Nor we do just take satisfaction in being in the winners’ bracket.”
The Hawks were a perfect 18-for-18 from the foul line, led by an 8-for-8 effort from Jones. In the second half, Saint Joseph’s shot 41.4 percent from the field and only had two turnovers. For the game, SJU made 52.9 percent of its three-point attempts, hitting 9-of-17.
