ARLINGTON, Texas – Senior Sara Mostafa finished with a game-high 21 points along with eight rebounds to lead the George Washington women’s basketball team to a 63-41 victory over the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) Sunday afternoon at Texas Hall.
The Colonials improve to 21-16 all time in season-opening games including a 5-1 mark in the past six seasons.
GW (1-0) got off to a hot start as senior Tara Booker recorded eight consecutive points to open the game, including two three pointers, giving the Colonials an 8-1 lead. GW would never trail the rest of the way as they went into halftime with a 28-18 advantage. Booker finished with 13 points, seven rebounds, four steals and two blocks.
The Colonials exposed UTA in the post as they totaled 34 points in the paint. Mostafa was dominant, recording her 21 points on 7-of-12 shooting and routinely drawing fouls. She finished 7-of-9 from the free throw line.
GW finished with a plus-eight differential in turnovers, which led to 10 fast break points. Additionally, the Colonials outrebounded the Mavericks 39-34, including a 12-10 advantage in offensive rebounds, which led to 14 second-chance points.
The Colonial defense constantly forced poor shot selection by UTA, especially in the second half as the Mavericks shot just 29 percent from the field. GW finished with 14 steals and three blocks and led by as many as 27 points late in the second half.
Redshirt junior Brooke Wilson narrowly missed a double-double, finishing with nine points and 10 rebounds while senior Tiana Myers added seven points, four rebounds and two assists.
Two GW freshmen made their collegiate debuts on Sunday afternoon. Chakecia Millerplayed well, finishing with two points, two steals, two rebounds and one assist in 24 minutes. Adrienne Phillips, a Texas native, finished with three points in five minutes of action.
The Colonials will return to action Wednesday evening in their home opener against Morgan State. Tip off is scheduled for 7 p.m. from Charles E. Smith Center.
