PHILADELPHIA – La Salle placed six players in double-figures to defeat Carleton University, the seven-time Canadian national champions, 74-56, in an exhibition game on Friday night from Tom Gola Arena. Senior Devon White and sophomore Tyreek Duren each scored 14 points to pace the Explorers.
Sophomore Sam Mills had 13 points on 6-for-11 shooting, while senior Earl Pettis, junior Ramon Galloway and freshman Jerrell Wright had 10 points each.
Carleton played nine Division I opponents during the late-summer. The Ravens posted two impressive wins over Atlantic 10 rival Saint Louis, including one by 24 points. Carleton also defeated defending Big West champion UC Santa Barbara by 10 points and Niagara by 30 points.
La Salle defeated Carlton, 66-64, on its Canadian trip in August but the Ravens were playing without the reigning national player of the year, Tyson Hinz. The Blue and Gold held Hinz to 10 points, eight of which came from the foul line, on Friday evening.
The Explorers took a 32-30 lead into the locker rooms at the half but outscored the Ravens, 42-26, in the second stanza. La Salle held the visitors to 33% shooting after halftime.
A 9-2 run midway through the second half extended the La Salle lead to 60-46 with 7:38 to play. The host held a comfortable lead through the final buzzer and shot 68% in the second half.
An impressive defensive effort, an Achilles heel last season for LU, forced 23 Carleton turnovers. The Explorers had 15 steals, led by four each by Pettis and Galloway.
La Salle hosts Lafayette in the season and home opener on Friday, November 11 at 7 PM.
