LSU nearly became a unanimous selection as our number one team in the country. Alabama was consistently pegged as the next best team. South Carolina (10), Texas A&M (4), Penn State (3), and USC (2) all received votes this week. Kansas State was ranked everywhere from tenth to third. Clemson’s unbeaten streak is impressing the PS members, as they are all the way up to sixth. Wisconsin’s loss on the final play of Saturday’s game has left a sour taste in our mouths, as they drop to 12th.
Teams | Points |
LSU (7) | 119 |
Alabama (1) | 112 |
Oklahoma St | 99 |
Boise State | 89 |
Stanford | 84 |
Clemson | 75 |
Oregon | 58 |
Kansas State | 53 |
Oklahoma | 53 |
Arkansas | 48 |
Michigan State | 47 |
Wisconsin | 35 |
Nebraska | 15 |
Houston | 14 |
Virginia Tech | 13 |

Not surprised that LSU is nearly unanimous. Can’t believe how interchangeable their parts are. That running back who played this weekend was a replacement? He was a stud! Finally Houston gets some love. They will run the table. Thought maybe SMU might contend with them, but they nearly laid a goose egg to Southern Miss (I think).
I am guessing the November 5th game will leave us with a unanimous #1. Really going out on a limb with that prediction. Then that’ll leave OK State, K State, Boise, Clemson, Houston and Stanford undefeated. That is STILL crowded. Have to believe that K State and OK State have best chance to drop one as they play 3-4 ranked teams including Baylor in that mix to wrap it up, including each other. Stanford has USC and Oregon, which I think they could lose to either possibly. Boise has TCU – possibility of a slip up there. Then that will leave the LSU/Bama winner versus either Clemson or Houston. Of course, Houston would be left out. Could Clemson sneak into this year’s title game???
Chas says
Kansas State and OK State are also playing on Nov. 5th, but Kansas State may already have lost, since they play Oklahoma next weekend. So, that will leave at most six undefeated teams two weeks from now. And, we might as well forget about Houston, regardless of which side of the discussion we’re on, because there’s no way they’re getting a shot at the BCS title game.
Clemson has Georgia Tech and South Carolina left, so I think they’re more likely to stumble than Boise State, but there’s definitely a chance they could sneak into the title game.
I’m going to predict the LSU/Bama winner takes on Boise State for the BCS title. Or, will the BCS find another way to leave Boise State out of the picture this year?
Smitty says
I think we are going to learn a lot about Kansas State over the next 4 weeks. 4 ranked opponents in the next 4 weeks. I have not been overly impressed with their body of work so far in 2011.
Is it just me, or is the SEC having a down year. After Alabama, LSU and maybe Arkansas, is the conference as good as it has been? I really don’t think so.
Chas says
No doubt Smitty, we’re going to find out what Kansas State is made of in the next two weeks.
I don’t know about the SEC, Smitty. They have three teams in the top ten and six in the top 25 (of the BCS). Florida’s having a down year, but their three losses were to Alabama, LSU and Auburn. Maybe they’re not as strong all the way through as usual? I don’t know.
How many bowl teams would you say is the standard expectation for the SEC? That would probably be how we can test your theory.
Drew says
I think the SEC is down, although I had no idea they had six in the Top 25. Maybe it just because Bama and LSU are so clearly better than every other team in the conference that it seems down.
I think the winner of the Bama/LSU game(Bama, IMO) will meet an undefeated Stanford team in the National Championship. I think an undefeated Boise team will be left out. If there was an undefeated SEC and undefeated Stanford, then Boise would deserve to get left out under the current system. Pains me to say that.
I see Clemson losing in the ACC Championship and OK State losing to Oklahoma.
Ideally, we have an undefeated SEC team and then Stanford/Boise/Clemson and OKState all go undefeated. That would really throw a wrench into the BCS. All of the major conferences are saying they’re fine with the BCS because if an undefeated squad from a BCS conference goes undefeated they usually make it, if there were a handful of unbeatens at the end of the year, I think we’d be hearing a different tune.
What are the big games this weekend?
Casey says
I can’t do it right now, but can someone go and look at the SEC’s record in bowl games over the last two years?
Kyle Soppe says
The SEC was 5-5 last year and 6-4 in 2009-2010
Smitty says
If 6 teams from the SEC are in the Top 25 right now, is that a tribute to their SOS as opposed to how good they truly are?
Personally, I think the SEC is down this year. Not a knock against the conference as it was bound to happen.
I do agree with Chas. Houston could run the table and they are not going to sniff the doorstep of the BCS Championship game. They might be lucky to even get in a BCS game.
Chas says
Well, the 6th team is 5-3 Auburn, and that’s just the BCS standings I’m talking about. They’re 26th in the AP poll. South Carolina and Georgia are pretty legit. But, if they’ve had 10 bowl teams the past two years, then they’re probably a little down. I’m not sure if I see that happening this year.
Drew says
Big games this weekend:
Baylor @ OK State
Clemson @ Ga Tech
Stanford @ USC
Oklahoma @ Kansas State
Michigan State @ Nebraska
Illinois @ Penn State
Dangerous games for Clemson and OK State. I don’t think Stanford has any problems with USC. You have to think Oklahoma runs wild on KState.
Not sure how closely any of you follow the Big Ten, but Penn State is 7-1 with their only loss to Alabama. They still have to play Illinois, Ohio State, Nebraska and Wisconsin. But they should be favored in two of those games. They are a sleeper BCS team. If they go 3-1 in those games, they will make the BigTen Championship. Wow.
Chas says
Drew, most folks haven’t been all that impressed with how Penn State has won, but what else is new, right? I suppose that perception will change if they beat Nebraska and Wisconsin, although winning in Madison is going to be a tall order.
Rey says
I actually had Penn State at 15 in my poll. Granted some of their wins should have been bvy a bigger margin, but they are beating everyone they should be beating right now.
