ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Four pitchers hurled 14 shutout innings as the Monroe Community College Tribunes swept a home double-header from the Alfred State Pioneers 1-0, 5-0 in NJCAA action Saturday afternoon.
Cass Roberts (Canandaigua) and Jon Klein (Cheektowaga) turned the trick in the opener while Tyler Wilson (Pittsford-Mendon) and Cody Petre (Letchworth) supplied the tag team in the night cap.
Roberts worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the first inning and never looked back from there. The freshman right-hander retired the final 12 batters he faced allowing just one ball to get out of the infield. Roberts struck out eight and walked one surrendering just two hits for the win.
Klein struck out the side in order for the save.
Monroe manufactured its lone run in the fifth. Brian Dixon (St. Joseph’s) led with a broken-bat infield single. Cameron Stimpson, with a sacrifice bunt, and Adam Urschel (Clarence), with a ground ball to the right side of the infield, moved the runner 90 feet from home plate. Dixon scampered home with the eventual game-winner on a passed ball.
Urschel went 1-2 and was hit by a pitch. Stimpson finished 1-2 to go with the sacrifice bunt.
Wilson retired eight consecutive between the first and fourth and fanned four while walking none over four strong innings in the second game. The sophomore right-hander did not allow a runner past first base.
Petre got some help from his battery mate, Dixon, to face the minimum over three stanzas. After the first batter he faced reached on an error, Petre retired the next hitter on a fly ball to left before the pitcher and catcher combined for a strike-’em-out-throw-’em-out double play to end the frame.
One inning later, an infield miscue gave the Pioneers another runner. After a sacrifice bunt, Dixon erased the runner with a pick off from behind the plate.
The Tribs needed just two hits to cross the dish three times in the fourth. After a pair of errors, a walk and a hit batsman, Brad Kaczka (Pittsford Sutherland) came home on a wild pitch. Frank Poerio (Hampton) plated Ralph Alloco (McQuaid) with a one-out opposite field single through the right side of the infield. Another wild pitch put runners on second and third, and Eliecer Carrera (Franklin) came through with an infield base hit scoring Zach Salvia (Pittsford Sutherland).
The Black and Gold added a pair in the sixth. Urschel led with a double to center field. Vinny Bomasuto (Dunkirk) put runners on the corners with an infield single to the hole at shortstop. Danny Mendick (Pittsford Mendon) did a job with a sacrifice fly to center field. Kazcka followed with a flair over the drawn infield to bring home Bomasuto.
Poerio led the Tribs with four hits in six at bats for the afternoon.
Mendick had two hits in four at bats with a walk and a sacrifice.
Dixon reached base three times on the afternoon including two base hits.
Kazcka reached base all three times in the night cap.
Klein and Petre along with Jimmy Gutowski (Gates-Chili) tossed seven no-hit innings in a loss last week to Erie Community College.
MCC improves to 4-4 for the fall.
The Tribunes host a pair of double-headers next weekend. Mercyhurst comes to town on Saturday with a Niagara Community paying a visit to East Henrietta Road on Sunday. Both double dips are scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
