Anyone care to discuss MLB’s refusal to allow the Mets to wear hats Sunday?

    What?

Yea Bill, that was a case of simple ignorance. I guess there were some rules/regulations or something that justified the move, but common sense has to take over at some point. Baseball was huge in restoring peace here in America, it gave us something we could count on in times of chaos, and not letting the Mets do as much as wear a hat to recognize that makes 0 sense. MLB dropped the ball on this one, and I would hate to be the p.r guy that has to explain the decision.

If you didn’t see it Casey, MLB said players could wear the FDNY hats and others only in the pregame warmup, and not during the game. The Mets, who refused the edict delivered through Torre, complied this time (the first time around they ignored what MLB said), but some players wore the hats on the bench, until an MLB person came into the dugout during the 4th inning and confiscated all the hats. MLB saw no problem, however, in hawking an almost 40 dollar commemorative hat during the event, the officially sanctioned hat. Olbermann had a good rip on it the other night.

Apparently they didn’t have to oblige.

Not much more to be said than you guys already have. If MLB was embarrassed that the issue went public, then maybe they should realize they made the wrong decision in the first place.

On a different topic, here is something that I’ve been stewing on recently…

What do you think of the fact that disciples of Bill Belichek have had little success once they’ve moved on. (i.e. Eric Mangini who is an analyst for ESPN, Romeo Crennel (sp.?) who is the D.C. for the Cheifs (nice game Sunday vs. the Bills), Charlie Weis(3 different jobs), and the ex-Bronco Coach Josh McDaniels (nowhere to be found)????

What does this say about Belichek?? Does it make him look better or worse? I will reserve my opinion as to see what others think.

Belichick makes it look easier than it is. His assistants have thought they could instantly acquire his sway as soon as they were on their own. It doesn’t work that way.

McDaniels went into Denver and tried to clear house. Then he realized he had nothing.

Weis? He was/is NOT head coaching material. He tried walking around with a chip on his shoulder, and it didn’t work. Weis looks pretty good in his latest job move. His leaving the KC job is on Haley.

Some of these guys are also from the Parcells tree.

Big college game tonight: #3 LSU visits #25 Miss State. LSU is a better team than Miss State, but the game is in Starkville and anything can happen on the road in the SEC. Just have a feeling that the “Mad Hatter”, Lucky Les Miles, will somehow pull a rabbit out again. Rooting for the upset, but the Tigers will steal a close one 26-24.

Let’s remember that Belichick struggled with his coaching gig with the Browns as well. He went back to be a coordinator for awhile until he was ready to try again.

Now the Broncos gave the Boy Wonder way too much leniency and it cost them. He is now the OC in St. Louis. He has admitted he made mistakes and has learned from them. Expect to see him again in a Head coaching role in the next 10 years. I also remember Belichick thinking he wasn’t ready.

Weis isn’t head coaching material. That has nothing to do with Belichick.

  12. Chas says

    September 15, 2011 at 1:31 pm

All this may have nothing to do with Belichick, but it’s also possible that he’s just not a great mentor. If that’s the case, so what? He’s paid to be a head coach (and a damn good one at that), not a mentor.

  13. Wally says

    September 15, 2011 at 5:43 pm

Quite possible, Chas …. I gotta think Belijerk sucks at mentorship. The guy can’t carry on conversation without putting people to sleep. It’s actually amazing his teams do so well. I gotta think his smug attitude rubs off on his asst coaches and they go out on their own thinking it will work for them too. NOT. He gets great results in NE though … i’ll admit that. Maybe he’s sooooooooo smart that it just trumps the need to have any charisma. One of life’s great mysteries.

You have had an actual conversation with Bill Belichick?

Seriously Wally – there are two sides of Bill Belichick and you see the side he wants you to see. In case you haven’t been following the Pats over the last 10 years – their mantra has been exactly what you see with Bill Belichick – mundane and to the point. Outside of the eye – Belichick is anything but mundane and boring.

Do you really think he would had so much success for the past 10 years if he was boring?

Try checking out Michael Holley’s book about following Belichick and the Pats for a season.

He really isn’t as much of a jerk as I thought. Thanks for opening my eyes, guys.

  18. Dan says

    September 16, 2011 at 10:58 am

I believe that there is a series coming out, not sure which channel, that follows Bill Belichek all through last season. I hope that it is not just rumor as that show would be a “must see” in my opinion.

They are talking about the documentary on ESPN radio today and playing excerpts from it. They are raving about the documentary and how it really gets into the mind and personality of the “Hoodie”. Belichick is going to have a lot of new fans by the time it is done.

Dan….documentary is on the NFL network.
