PHILADELPHIA – Saint Joseph’s basketball coach Phil Martelli has announced that guard Evan Maschmeyer has accepted a scholarship and will be eligible to play for the 2011-12 Hawks as a freshman.

The 6-3 Maschmeyer is from Jeffersonville High School and Jeffersonville, Ind. He averaged 15.0 points per game this past season and was an All-Area selection by the News and Tribune. As a junior, Maschmeyer was on the Jeffersonville team that was a win away from the Class 4A State championship.

“Evan’s a hard-nosed player who is good in every aspect of the game and is a solid three-point shooter. He reminds me of (former Hawk) Chet Stachitas. We’re looking forward to having him join the team,” said Martelli, who will be entering his 17th season with the Hawks.

In other personnel news, center Todd O’Brien has left Saint Joseph’s to attend graduate school at the University of Alabama-Birmingham. His eligibility is pending an NCAA waiver.
