How screwed is the Unviversity of Miami’s football team? It is amazing the number of players and coaches that are being implicated in this.
Is this a time where the NCAA sends a message to the rest of the schools and hands out the death penalty?
I was listening to Mark May last night and he simply stated, ” if 1/3 of the allegations are true – the death penalty should be considered. If more than 1/2 are true – the NCAA has give the University of Miami the death penalty.” Not since SMU has it been handed out.
Smitty, the Miami story is definitely the one grabbing the headlines this week. I certainly can’t say I’m surprised or disappointed. Being an ND backer, you certainly can’t back Miami. They’ve been a renegade program ever since Jimmy Johnson, the pork-faced satan, walked onto that campus. They are the “Convicts” in Catholics vs Convicts. Everyone has known for years that they’ve broken the rules and apparently, this crap has been going on through 2010. I hope they get the death penalty. They deserve it.
Bill – helmet sticker for that link. Great stuff. How about Maybin when he rounds third and looks across the infield and realizes Wright still has the ball. DOH!
Re: Miami U
I feel terrible for Al Golden. He stayed at Temple an extra couple of years despite being sought after and interviewing at a number of better programs. His name was always in the mix when a job came open. He stayed as loyal as one can stay at a program like Temple, and some would say went beyond what he should have serving that program. Certainly he didn’t think he was going into a squeaky clean job, but he couldn’t have envisioned this.
I also think these stories will keep coming. To think Ohio State, UNC and Miami are the only ones pulling this stuff on that grand of a scale is denial.

But, Rey, if one were to ask themselves during the ol’ job search … “What program(s) carry the greatest amount of risk that past infractions might come to light?” … ya gotta think Miami would be at the TOP of that list. Golden should’ve known there was some risk involved in taking this position. BUT of course all the MONEY Miami threw at him very likely made it worth the risk to take this job, in his eyes. We always say … “We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it”. Well, we can now see that bridge for Al.
Financially, Al Golden will continue to be paid quite handsomely … but either it will totally suck to be the football coach for Miami … or there won’t be football at Miami and they’ll have to let him go (with pay) so he can move on somewhere else and coach football if he wants. It might actually be worse for him if the NCAA falls short if giving them the death penalty. How can you have fun coaching a Div 1 team that has a 10 year bowl ban, no TV appearances, and 30% fewer scholarhsips than everyone else?

Casey – would have liked to be in Maybin’s head at that moment -you can almost feel the “DOH!”
And are you guys really surprised at Miami? Colleges seem to be no different than corporatons.
Smitty – I see the Matt Cain love. haha. I am not saying he’s not good, just not elite. He did pitch well last night though, and the ‘pen did all they could to try to blow it
I agree with Kyle that Cain is a good (maybe very good), but not an elite pitcher…yet. But, I think one day he’ll reach the point where he might even become Wally’s next man-crush. It’s going to be hard to unseat Justin Verlander, though. 🙂
Cameron Maybin goofed up on that play, but I give more credit to David Wright than assign blame to Maybin on that one.

Nobody needs to be blamed for anything that goes wrong in a Mets-Padres game …. it’s pure entertainment now that both teams are COMPLETELY BURIED in the standings.
Chas … I prefer “bromance” to man-crush. But, yes, Verlander is the “apple of my eye” as he is well on this way to a first Cy Young 🙂
Wally – you can call it bromance, you can call it man-crush. But the bottom line is Justin Verlander is the jam in your jellyroll. 🙂
Wallysays
Ha! Good one. But,Smitty, can you have jam in a jellyroll?? Wouldn’t it then be a jamroll? I thought ya had to have jelly in a jellyroll? Can someone help us out here?
Chas – a video from Preservation Hall. C’est Magnifique!

well, in the old days, jellyroll was slang used either for the vagina or intercourse. I’m guessing that wasn’t the intent of the conversation here, or maybe it was. Either way, count me out.
Good. Why stop there? The Cubs as an organization should get the Death Penalty for over 60+ years of sheer incompetence. ( I woulda said over 100 years but they did make it to the WS in 1945.)
As we say in Chicago … “Heck, anyone can have a bad century.”
Anyways, after the U of Miami gets their DP, the Cubs should be next in line.

This is ugly..
Matt Cain went 8 innings last night… 🙂
… AND … he looked very good doing it 🙂

Al Golden has probably sought out legal counsel to investigate his choices regarding continued employment with Miami.
Anyone see David Wright’s play at third last night? I haven’t laughed so hard in a long time. Here’s a link to the vid in case you didn’t catch it on espn – https://newyork.mets.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?tcid=mm_nym_vid&c_id=nym
That was awesome! Hadn’t seen it Bill, so thanks for sharing.
Chas, I was laughing so hard the kids came down from upstairs asking what was wrong. And seeing Maybin duck, well, that was the icing on the cake.
