Wow … the manager of the hottest team in baseball … Jim Riggleman of the Washington Nationals … decides to resign because the team wouldn’t confirm picking up his option today. On one hand, it’s shocking that someone could walk away in the middle of such a hot streak with things going so well (for once); but on the other hand, he’s making what appears to be “chump change” by pro sports standards: he has been working on one-year deals since taking over for Manny Acta in 2009. He was being paid $600,000 this year and the Nationals held a team option for 2012 at $600,000.
I know, I know …. hire me … I’d work for that!!!! Yes we would!!! But seriously … what are MLB managers making these days? I woulda thought AT LEAST $1mill per yr … maybe closer to $2 mill. Girardi has got to be making $3M+.

Best player on the board in the NBA draft this year? Is it Derrick Williams (Arizona Wildcats)?? That’s what i’m thinking … but hey, it’s not about me … what are you guys thinkin’???? And you gals, too … Flat Abs?
Ten years from now we will be talking about all the guys chosen before Kenneth Faried, and how all those teams that overlooked Faried made a big mistake.
Casey … where should Faried have been drafted then? He should’ve gone ahead of who?
He was drafted #22 overall, just behind Nolan Smith. Will he be a better pro than one or both of the Morris twins, drafted 13 and 14? Better than Tristan Thompson at #4?
It’s not a matter of me thinking that Faried should have been chosen in front of anybody else. We have plenty of examples of the best player not being chosen first. Faried has an intangible skill set that will show up over time.
I take that as a bold prediction from Casey more than an indictment of the other teams. Right? It’s not like we’re talking Sam Bowie vs. Michael Jordan.
That’s all I have to say about the NBA draft, other than that I’m disappointed, but not surprised, Talor Battle didn’t get drafted. He’ll get a shot with someone as a free agent.
Now, on to this Jim Riggleman thing. My inclination is to take his side. He’s essentially been an interim manager since mid-season 2009. The team is playing better than they ever have since moving to Washington and he deserves to be treated better.
On the other hand, you can’t give your GM an ultimatum and expect it to work. Also, how could you ever expect a player who’s unhappy with his contract to play for you after you pulled a stunt like that. OK, maybe I’m not completely on Riggleman’s side.

Yes, Chas, if you’re gonna go with the ultimatum tactic, at least give your GM more than 24 hours. How about a week or two? But anyway, I think Riggleman has stained himself and will find it hard to get another managerial job. Will be viewed as a quitter.
So what does the avg MLB manager make? I’m guessing $2M per annum.

Casey, let’s try another view on this Faried thing. What current or former NBA player do you think he might resemble or have similar career??
Interestingly enough, I can’t find any current data on MLB manager salaries. Well, at least, I can’t find them all in one place. This site is a great source for player salaries, but they just have a list as of 2007:
It looks like the median salary, as of 2007, was around $1 million. The average would probably be higher, due to Torre’s $7.5 million. I’m sure, by now, the average is at least $1.5 million.

Well, I thought you might say something like that, Casey. They were certainly raving about his drive, his motor never stops. And I think he’s bigger and taller than Rodman. Joakim Noah of the Bulls is trying to be Rodman with some offense and without the drama, too. He’s got some improving to do but he might get there.

Great pick by the Pacers taking Kawhi Leonard.

I don’t like doing that because it puts a player inside a jar, but if you must: Faried is Dennis Rodman without the drama.
