Greg Logins named l-AAA ADA scholar-athlete
BUFFALO, N.Y. – Canisius College men’s basketball player Greg Logins (Sodus, N.Y.) has been named to the ninth-annual Division I-AAA Athletic Directors Association (ADA) Scholar-Athlete Team. Logins is one of 11 Division I men’s basketball players from across the country to receive this honor.
Men’s basketball student-athletes from all Division I-AAA ADA member institutions were eligible for this prestigious award. Each of the nominees are required to have a minimum grade point average of 3.20 on a 4.00 scale, and the student-athlete needed to be a starter or important reserve with legitimate athletic credentials.
Steve Masiello named Manhattan College head coach
RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Manhattan College has named Steve Masiello its 23rd head men’s basketball coach in program history as made official on Monday. A meet and greet to announce the Jaspers’ newest basketball coach is scheduled for Wednesday, April 13 at 3:30 p.m. in Draddy Gymnasium.
Masiello arrives back in his native New York after spending the last six years in the BIG EAST as an assistant at Louisville under head coach Rick Pitino. Over his six-year tenure at Louisville, Masiello helped lead the Cards’ to a 148-61 (.708) overall record, six straight 20-win seasons and four NCAA Tournament appearances, advancing to the Elite Eight twice (2008 & 2009). Masiello played a vital role in building Louisville’s 2009 BIG EAST Championship team which won 31 games, including a program record 16 in conference, and entered the NCAA Tournament as the No. 1 overall seed.
MAAC celebrates record four teams in post-season play
In the 2010-2011 MAAC men’s basketball this past season, four teams earned a spot in a postseason tournament, the most teams playing extra games in league history. Here is a look back at how the four did in March:
NCAA Championship
Saint Peter’s, the 2011 MAAC Champion, was the 14th seed in the Southwest Region and paired with third-seeded Purdue University in the second round of the 2011 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship. E’Twaun Moore had 19 points, overcoming seven turnovers, and JaJuan Johnson had 16 points and 16 rebounds, despite shooting just 6-for-16, as Purdue jumped out early and defeated Saint Peter’s 65-43 in the Southwest Region. Senior forward Jeron Belin scored a team-high 12 points off the bench for the Peacocks. Senior forward Ryan Bacon recorded eight points, four rebounds and three steals. Senior guard Wesley Jenkins also netted eight points in his final game for Saint Peter’s.
Sydney Johnson named Fairfield University Head Men’s Basketball Coach
FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fairfield University Director of Athletics Gene Doris announced that Princeton University’s Sydney Johnson will become the head coach of the Stags men’s basketball program. Johnson comes to Fairfield University after spending the last four seasons as the head coach for the Tigers. He will be formally introduced to the Fairfield community during a press conference on Wednesday, April 6, at 11 a.m. in the John A. Barone Campus Center on the University’s main campus.
Eight-team field for Old Spice Classic completed
FAIRFIELD, Conn. — The eight-team field for the Old Spice Classic has been finalized with the addition of Indiana State University. The first seven teams were announced earlier in the year which included Fairfield University, Arizona State University, University of Dayton, DePaul University, University of Minnesota, University of Texas Tech, and Wake Forest University.
Former men’s basketball manager reflects on the Final Four
Donny Lind finished his time last year as a Loyola University Maryland men’s basketball manager, graduated from the school, packed his bags and moved to Richmond, Va., where he would begin his career in the coaching field.
Lind took a position as a graduate assistant with the Virginia Commonwealth men’s basketball team looking to gain more experience and build his resume at the start of his coaching career.
Breeden and Griffin leave Siena
Siena announced Tuesday that men’s basketball players Jonathan Breeden and Kyle Griffin won’t return next season.
Both players have submitted transfer paperwork and received conditional releases to play elsewhere.
