Performance of the week | Joey Rodriguez

It is that time again. Let’s hear from you, readers. We had another week of stellar performances. Pick the ONE (1), UNE, UNO from March 14th-20th that stands out to you, and tell us a story.

VCU’s Joey Rodriguez grabs my POTW.

A week ago, the VCU Rams wavered between being the butt of jokes and the focus of frustrations.

Deemed unworthy of qualifying for the NCAA tournament, the Rams went on to win three games (still checking to see if that has ever been done in the past), and Rodriguez led the way.

The senior guard dished out 23 assists over the week while committing just three turnovers.

Rodriguez handed out 11 dimes and scored 12 points without committing a turnover as the Rams advanced to the Sweet 16 with a 94-76 victory over Purdue.

Rodriguez started the week with a workmanlike eight-point, five-assist outing as VCU bounced USC 59-46. Two days later, the Rams slayed Georgetown 74-56, and Rodriguez poured in 17 points with seven assists.

Who gets your POTW?

I’ve watched about three minutes total of the NCAA tournament so far, so my POTW goes to Joe Posnanski for writing this in response to a hilariously ridiculous, and unprovoked, rant by San Francisco columnist Bruce Jenkins:

I think there are few times in sports that we are humbled and this weekend was one of those instances. I am nominating Anthony Robles of Arizona State who won the NCAA wrestling title in 125 lb division – on one leg. Born without his right leg, Robles dominated his opponents to win the title.

Wrestling is hard enough.. Doing it with only one leg is absolutely amazing.

    Smitty – good call.
