Kudos to Grant Hill. He, obviously, understands this much more than Jalen Rose:

My mother always says, “You can live without Chaucer and you can live without calculus, but you cannot make it in the wide, wide world without common sense.”

This Juan Fernandez guy is like the entire Temple team. 17 points with a minute to go in the first half. I’ve going to have to search the A-10 articles to see if anything has been written about him here.

Of course, Talor Battle has 13 as well. Temple leads 35-33 as I write this.

Not to steal Rey’s thunder, but let me introduce Lavoy Allen…and of course Ramon Moore and Khalif Wyatt. 🙂

  5. Chas says

    March 17, 2011 at 2:40 pm

Yeah, I spoke too soon. Neither Fernandez nor Battle have scored in the second half. Moore and Wyatt both have 10 for Temple. Frazier has 11 for Penn State.

Temple 45, Penn State 43 with 11:26 to play.

  6. Casey says

    March 17, 2011 at 2:42 pm

    Wyatt is sneaky good.

  7. Casey says

Moore, Moore, Moore…how do ya like it? How do ya like it?

  8. Chas says

    March 17, 2011 at 2:46 pm

Didn’t expect a game between two defensive oriented teams to be this high-scoring. Penn State has the shooting edge so far (.432 to .400), but Temple is capitalizing from the free throw line (11-13).

    51-48 Temple, 7:08 to play.

Following the user comments below the Yahoo box score is taking me back to my college days. Temple fans writing things like “You are LOOSING” and Penn State fans calling them out for it. 🙂

It sucks when work gets in the way of a good sporting event. This is an exciting game, even following it online.

  11. Casey says

Yeah and Morehead State just took the lead with 4 seconds remaining over Louisville.

Kenneth Faried lives to play another day. Morehead state advances!!!!!!!

  13. Chas says

I hope you’ll be saying the same about Talor Battle. If Rey was on here, we’d be talking some smack…especially is he misspelled anything. 😉

  20. Smitty says

    March 17, 2011 at 7:07 pm

So far it has been a good day for the Mid-majors.

I think a lot of people are trying to figure out who Morehead St. is. Richmond makes everyone stand up and notice the A10.

Princeton takes Kentucky to the wire. Butler and Old Dominion play a great game.

    It is truly March Madness.

  21. Casey says

    March 17, 2011 at 7:38 pm

Richmond beating Vanderbilt comes as no surprise. I do not consider it an upset. The Spiders are better than the Commodores.

  22. Smitty says

    March 17, 2011 at 9:29 pm

Agreed. I think the shocker was Morehead St.

I literally told a guy at work that they had won and he thought I was playing an Apri Fools joke on him.

  23. Crossword Pete says

    March 17, 2011 at 9:55 pm

FYI, my grandson, age 4.5, picked Morehead St AND Richmond.

  24. Smitty says

    March 17, 2011 at 10:34 pm

    Hello Gonzaga!

This isn’t surprising, but they are shooting the lights out!

  25. Casey says

    March 18, 2011 at 8:04 am

I don’t even know if Morehead State is really a shocker. Faried is statistically the best rebounder in the country and his field goal percentage is 62.5. I have heard him described as Dennis Rodman without the wedding dress. Combine that with a senior backcourt in Harper and Goodman along with a guy that can hit from behind the arc in Hill and whoaaa nellie. Louvul’s press and traps didn’t bother the Eagles.

Sets up an OUTSTANDING game between Richmond and Morehead State. Both teams bring a lot of experience to the floor.

  26. Casey says

    March 18, 2011 at 8:05 am

I was laughing throughout the Gonzaga game. Where was that team all year. It looked like a walk in the park the way Gray and Harris were lighting it up.

I was thinking of writing about the “not-so” Fab Five documentary. I would have a tough time topping this: https://msn.foxsports.com/collegebasketball/story/ESPN-The-Fab-Five-documentary-Jalen-Rose-Chris-Webber-Juwan-Howard-Jimmy-King-Ray-Jackson-031511

Chas – did you read Chris Webber’s blog?

  31. Chas says

    March 18, 2011 at 12:39 pm

    No, but I will now.

  32. Chas says

    March 18, 2011 at 12:51 pm

Here’s where Webber misses the point:

“Jalen’s Uncle Tom comment wasn’t a slight at Coach K or even an assault at the kids. Jalen’s comment was to alert coaches across the country that basketball talent is basketball talent, no matter if it comes from the suburbs or the city.”

What is missing from this statement? That’s right, there’s no mention of the word student. Of course, that’s not to say that, just because they’re from the inner city, the Fab Five couldn’t be good students, but, as Whitlock says in his article, part of recruiting student-athletes is looking for players who are serious about staying to get their degrees. Neither Webber nor Howard nor Rose did that. Grant Hill did. Correct me if I’m wrong.

  33. Casey says

    March 18, 2011 at 12:55 pm

Chas – you are preaching to the choir.

How about Webber’s last comment about judging people. What is it that they are doing then?

Tell me again why Tennessee got a spot in the NCAA tournament?

  35. Smitty says

Casey I was thinking the same thing.

Interesting conversation on the radio while driving home from work. If you could have Morgan Freeman or Gus Johnson narrate your life for a day – which one would you choose? One of the guys on the radio rationalized that Freeman would make you want to be a better person, but Gus Johnson would make you want to do crazy stuff just to get him wound up.

” Is Smitty going to make it work on time? ”

He is racing to the door, he has seconds to spare. He dives to the door… YESSSSSSSS! ” I am going with Gus Johnson.

  36. Smitty says

    March 18, 2011 at 6:11 pm

Amen to Jason Whitlock! That is a phenomenal response.

Wow Chris Webber.. As Dirty Harry would say, ” A man has gotta know his limitations.” Chris, I think you found yours.

Including those damned baggy shorts that go past the knee!!! I always favored the “medium cut” for hoops. Let’s look like athletes instead of rappers! (But please also stay away from those near speedos of the 70-80s.)

Back in town from London, boys. Had a jolly good time with the chaps, but friggin’ glad to be back here in the States where something besides cricket and futbol is on!!! 🙂

Just finished watching the Fab Five documentary and reading Whitlock’s response. I personally don’t see the uproar over Rose’s comment. I took it as a candid remark about what he thought it was like, not what he actually believes it to be. It was a documentary – did you want him to sugar coat his thoghts as an ignorant 18 year old kid at the time? I loved how open he was throughout the whole thing. It was instrumental to getting inside how their minds worked at the time. And Hill’s response wasn’t needed. Why respond? Rose wasn’t attacking him, but simply saying how he saw things. And is it me, or is everyone ignoring the parallels between the two? Rose saw Hill’s life as one he should have had. Wouldn’t you have been bitter as a poor teenager as your rich father had nothing to do with your life? I would have been as boisterous and outspoken, too. I would have felt wronged and cheated by the world.

Two things bothered me from Whitlock’s article:

“…had the audacity to embark on a media tour preaching about black Duke players being Uncle Toms.”

Who was preahcing? It was one part of the documentary. It was how they viewed them. You wanted Jalen Rose to make a new reality because he was too skewed to be politically correct? Come on. It was a part of who they were and they were basically sharing about how ignorant they were, not “preaching” it. Terrible choice of words by Whitlock.

Secondly: “Furthermore, unlike Steve Fisher at the time, Coach K did more than roll the ball on the court. He coached.”

How the heck does he know this? Sometimes, a certain group needs independence. Why is this always interpretted as “not coaching”? And how would Whitlock know? Did he attend every practice? Was he in the huddles? In the film rooms? Sounds like a pompous, absurd “wannabe” coach.

And the only difference between Georgetown’s breakthrough and the Fab Five’s is the exploitation. Look at the numbers they presented: Michigan goes from 1.6 million dollars in sales to over $10 million! These 5 teenagers who came from poverty are watching this and wondering where they fit in. It wasn’t about breaking through some kind of barrier in terms of playing, but breaking through as a marketing entity, like it or not. Why is it because they had style that they are automatically dismissed as not having substance????? Two years in a row as runners-up as 18, 19 year olds. Again – how many can compare with that?

  46. Rey says

    March 19, 2011 at 7:15 pm

I don’t get it. Skip Bayless’ questions show a complete lack of “social consciousness” to use Rose’s words. I know the connotation of the term Rose used, but again – he took an antiquated term and tried to use in a modern context. It just didn’t translate. Is the uproar about him using that term? Or are people really thiking like Skip Bayless? What am I missing here?

  47. Casey says

    March 19, 2011 at 7:30 pm

What facts is Jalen Rose using to support his stance?

Here is one fact – the Michigan Wolverines don’t have any banners to represent what occurred during the early 90s with their basketball program.

The university instead has a black eye. Another institution avoided this, and Jalen Rose feels it is his need to bring that place down? Stay classy.

Funny how Jalen Rose continues these assertions while wearing a nice suit and tie. Maybe, he should show a little respect instead of perpetuating his juvenile views.

Do you think Jalen took the time to maybe do some research and read something like this: https://www.northcarolinahistory.org/encyclopedia/450/entry

None of his arguments have anything to do with school.

  48. Casey says

    March 19, 2011 at 7:34 pm

It is hard for me to not see this as a whole lot of sour grapes on the part of Jalen Rose.

    The Fab Five?

What is the definition of fabulous? Maybe we should change the definition the way Jalen Rose is trying to change history.

  49. Rey says

    March 19, 2011 at 7:36 pm

“perpetuating his juvenile views” It was a documentary about when he was 17-19 years old. That’s how he felt; he had an assumption as a result of the environment he was in and overall ignorance. I just didn’t take it as an objective attack on the validity of Duke or its program. It seems like an overreaction to me, I guess.

  50. Casey says

    March 19, 2011 at 7:39 pm

Yes, and he reiterated those views by saying “Coach K would recruit my kids.” As if to say now that I am of a higher socio-economic standing, Coach K will acknowledge me.

Overreaction? You’ve written more on this topic than anyone on this site.
