It is that time again. Let’s hear from you readers. We had another week of stellar performances. Pick the ONE (1), UNE, UNO from February 21st-27th that stands out to you, and tell us a story.
Greg Logins earned my POTW.
Logins scored 23 of his game-high 26 points in the second half as the Canisius Golden Griffins pounded the Loyola Greyhounds 75-58 in Metro-Atlantic Athletic Conference action at the Koessler Athletic Center.
The senior forward hit seven of his career-high eight treys after the break pacing the Golden Griffins to a 49-26 advantage in the second stanza. Logins led a senior group that scored that 46 of the Griffs’ second-half points.
“Once I started making the first couple of shots,” Logins said. “My confidence rose through the roof. My teammates said if you’re open, shoot it. We’re going to find you. That’s what they did. Every time they passed the ball, I just got my feet set and knocked it down.”
Logins connected on 9-of-15 from the field including 8-of-10 from behind the arc. The Sodus, New York native grabbed seven rebounds and had two steals.
Earlier this season Logins eclipsed 1,200 points and 700 rebounds. He joined an elite group of just five Golden Griffins on that plateau. Michael Meeks (1992-96) had 1,872 points and 838 rebounds. Craig Wise (1991-95) finished with 1,799 and 784. Hank Nowak (1954-57) registered 1,449 and 880. Darren Fenn (1997-01) tallied 1,414 with 852. Logins now has 1,257 and 752.
Logins is one of five current Canisius seniors that will complete their Master’s degree at the end of this semester. Fellow classmates, Julius Coles, Elton Frazier, Robert Goldsberry and Tomas Vazquez-Simmons will also complete their graduate work over the next two months.
Who gets your POTW?
Rey says
That’s a pretty big second half.
I’m giving my POTW to the New York Knick’s defense. Yes – a team that has Amare Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony. After giving up 34 or so first quarter points, they held the Heat to just around 50 for the rest of the game. Anthony guarded James on the last two possessions of the game and Stoudemire got a big block on him as well. I thought Anthony took it upon himself to guard the 2-time reigning MVP and actually did awesome contesting his last shot that could have tied the game.
By the way – the Heat are now below .500 against teams with winning records this season.
Casey says
Great call Rey!
Chas says
Good call by Rey.
Really not much going on in the sports world as far as I’m concerned, but I’ll nominate Terry Francona for stepping in and ordering a cease-fire in the Bobby Jenks-Ozzie Guillen war of words. It would have been better if Francona had personally called Guillen rather than use Joey Cora as a go-between, but kudos to him for attempting to convince both idiots (Jenks and Guillen) to take the high road.
Smitty says
I am going with JaJuan Johnson who had a Kevin Love type of day yesterday against the Michigan State Spartans.
20 points, 17 rebounds and 7 blocks is a dominating performance.
The streak is over… 🙂
Of course, I might nominate Chas next week for his nomination of anything Red Sox. 🙂
Wally says
Smitty opens the door and Wally sneaks in … I’m going with Northwestern’s Luke Donald for winning the WGC Match Play Championship. Why not? It’s a “homer-golf” call. 🙂
Smitty says
Wally..couldn’t agree with you more. Luke Donald was impressive all week during the WGC. He beat his Ryan Moore in the Saturday morning round so bad, he had a couple of hours to relax while Matt Kuchar had a tough time putting Y. E. Yang away.
Chas says
Huh?!? Wha-a…wha-at the heck is going on with this thread?
Chas says
Smitty, did you hack my account AND Wally’s? Then to confuse us even further, you nominate an actual athlete for POTW?
Just kidding with that “athlete” crack. I don’t want to start that discussion…which, of course, will be capped off by a debate as to whether or not NASCAR drivers are athletes.
Wally says
Or race horses. Right … don’t go there.
