Alright, come on guys, let’s step it up. The last thing anybody wants is for Wally to return from vacation and to think the Pine can’t survive without him. So, here goes…
By the way – take a moment to click on the “Vote For My Band” ad to the right >
You will go to Bill’s band and Genesee Beer. The login process takes 45 seconds.
I am sad to see the dismantling of the Jazz. Just two years ago they had Williams and Boozer, and I thought they were a player or two from the championship.
Wainwright’s injury is a head-scratcher. They are in Spring Training where everything is supposed to be controlled and this still happens?
Shouldn’t we add Hank Steinbrenner to the list of possible topics? Seems like the only time he takes his foot out of his mouth is to switch it with the other appendage. Luxury tax is socialism? Although I do not agree with the Pirates owner getting that money and NOT spending it on players.
Sure, it’s only fair that the topic that makes the Yankees front office look foolish be added to a list that includes a topic that has us scratching our heads at the tactics of the Red Sox front office. But, before Smitty comes running to defend boy Theo, I’ll say that we expect better of him than we do Hank Steinbrenner, who has proven time and time again that he inherited only his father’s worst qualities.
Holy crap! Spygate? So big brother is always watching.

So they checked his references, big deal. If I’m looking to replace a coffee maker, I scour the internet for weeks finding out information. If I’m spending $142 million on the coffee maker, I’m going a lot deeper.
Say, not that I care about basketball, but what about Carmello going to the Knickerbockers?
Wow Bill, WEEKS to buy a coffee maker! At that rate, you’d probably have been tailing Carl Crawford since he was 4 before signing him to a $142 million deal. 🙂
Casey and Rey are the guys to ask about basketball, but I think basically Casey said that ‘Melo makes the Knicks dangerous, but not really serious NBA title contenders. Neither ‘Melo nor A’mare are very good defenders, so that would be the Knicks downfall.
So, I’m guessing that means a team like the Bulls, for instance, won’t be taking them lightly in the playoffs, but they aren’t going to knock off the Bulls, Heat and Celtics (not necessarily in that order) in succession.
I am a little puzzled by the Kendrick Perkins..Obviously the Celtics know something or are they starting to retool on the fly?? They are showing a lot of faith in Shaq, Garnett and Krstic to stay healthy and provide serious rebounding.
What has been puzzling is that center this season has been an area where the C’s have been exposed by a couple of the good teams (Lakers and Spurs come to mind). So they exposing a weakened area further? If I had hair on my head, I would be scratching it.
Sorry took me so long to get in here.. been building my mansion and it has been distracting. Of course Hank and Chas already knew that.. 🙂
Okay I am not defending it – because it is a little weird. But if I was investing $142 million in a player, I would want to know what he is all about on and off the field. Especially after dealing with Manny for 6 years.
Of course I bet Hank is wishing he did something like that.. He might have thought twice about giving AJ Burnett $82.5 million.
First of all, AJ Burnett doesn’t have any off-field issues…at least that have been highly publicized, so I’m not sure that I get that comment. Burnett has on-field issues, of course, but I’m pretty sure the Yankees knew the risk they were taking when they signed him.
He had been inconsistent his entire career prior to that, and never really had a great season that warranted the payday he got. But, that’s what the starting pitcher market is like, and, of course, the Yankees are a big reason why it got that way, and are also the team that takes such signings to the extreme.
But, they won a World Series in AJ Burnett’s first year, and did the contract cripple them financially? Considering they were ready to give Cliff Lee a 5-year, $120 million contract if he wanted to play for them, obviously no. So, what’s the problem with the deal from the Yankees perspective?
This is going to sound a little ridiculous, but think about for a minute. Do you think the Yankees would change things if they could? I actually think no…only because they’re the Yankees, of course.
I don’t really know what to think of the whole tailing of Carl Crawford thing, to be honest. I get what people are saying about $142 million investment and all, but tailing him for 3-4 months seems a bit extreme.
I guess the real litmus test for whether or not it’s extreme to the point of being too much is: Do other teams do this? Or, will other teams now follow the Red Sox example? If the answer is no to both of those questions, what effect will this have on the Red Sox ability to sign free agents in the future? Probably nothing, I suppose. I mean, I think Theo told Crawford before they signed him, not after, and he still signed, but like Crawford said, it’s just a really, really creepy tactic.
Regarding the Celtics, Danny Ainge has proven to be pretty shrewd as a General Manager, or whatever his official title is. So, this could be a case of Ainge simply knowing what he’s doing. On sports talk radio this morning, a caller was saying something to the effect of, “I thought they were going to rebuild around Rondo and Perkins.” To which, I ask the question: Is Kendrick Perkins really that good? Or, was he just a really good role player on a team of stars?
Smitty – what was the context of the Bilas comment? Was he referring to the lack of maturity (because of the average age)? Or, the idea that the NBA has become a place where players go to showcase their offensive talents? Either way, I agree with him…to an extent.
That is probably PART of the reason why a guy like Jerry Sloan retires. Notice I said part – being in his late 60s I’m sure the NBA grind has worn him out. But Sloan has always preached a patient offense that requires guys to play together, and his teams always played solid defense. Try preaching that to this generation. Is there any coincidence that Sloan retires, and the Jazz trade Deron Williams? I took that as the Jazz sending a message that they can find someone else to wear the uniform.
Another way to look at it – outside of San Antonio, very few, if any, kids like the Spurs. Why? Because the Spurs are efficient. The Spurs plod along. This year they play more in transition, but that is because of their lineup. They can still grind it out in the half-court when the need it. That is not sexy. Tim Duncan is probably the best forward ever to play the game. You don’t see lot of kids wearing his stuff because he is not sexy. Duncan (in his prime) had more basketball skills than Kobe and/or LeBron.
All of this could lend itself to a return to the “defense wins championship” discussion. The glamorous portrayal of offense by the media can cloud the assessment of the influence that defense has over the long haul.
Kareem was on Mike and Mike the other day. Golic asked him why no one uses the sky hook anymore? Kareem’s response? Players are taught guard skills now. Everyone wants to dunk. Guys aren’t taught how to play with their back to the basket and it takes time to develop the hook. It is hard to sell kids on the idea of going through a period of failure when they can dunk. Thing is, Kareem’s LIFETIME SHOOTING PERCENTAGE WAS 56%! 56 PERCENT…for his career? Holy crap!
So back to the Bilas comment – as much as I love the NBA, has it become…impetuous? A bunch of kids who want to tell the old guard how things are done. Come to think of it, the NBA does a pretty good job of representing our society.
Another Bilas comment or tweet: “Over 60% of NBA and NFL players are BROKE five years after retirement. Answer? EDUCATION. Our culture of skipping steps doesn’t work.
The health of Perkins has to have something to do with the trade. Isn’t he on the shelf again?
Chas – you bring up a good point about where Perkins fit with the Celtics. Is he guy to build the team around with Rondo? Or, is he a player succeeding when surrounded by stars? It’s probably the latter.
Alright, well I forgot about that, but there hasn’t been anything Miguel Cabrera-like. Anyway, my point was not to defend Burnett, but to say that you didn’t need to tail AJ Burnett to know that he’s at least a bit of a head case. I also meant to say that the Yankees probably got too enamored with how he absolutely owned the Red Sox prior to coming to the Yankees. How they could have predicted that trend would take such an about-face, I don’t know.
Casey – re: “Will this deter free agents from signing with (the Red Sox)?”
I doubt it, but I just threw it out there for the sake of discussion. I have to believe that Boston is a pretty attractive place to come and play, and that the Sox organization is pretty highly regarded. Does this affect that perception? Maybe a tiny bit, but probably not enough to have an effect.
But, the Red Sox should learn from some of the Yankees’ experience. The prospect of coming to New York is kind of a double-edged sword that sometimes works in their favor and sometimes works against them. Could the same principle apply to Boston?
bill ribassays
Casey – first off, thanks for the ad for that band thing.
Second, when it comes to coffee makers, go for the cusinart. I can check the model number if needed, but the thing is a workhorse. Unless of course you want to go with some of the newer Japanese drip stuff, but that’s too out there for me.
We bought a Black & Decker model last year and had to return it because, believe it or not, it was impossible not to spill coffee while pouring. I kid you not. We paid a little more for the Cuisinart, and while I can’t call it a workhorse just yet, because we’ve only had it for a year, it’s pretty darn good.
If you want a refrigerator recommendation, let me know. Do you know anything about dishwashers and garbage disposals?
You should change the tag line of the site to, “Everything you always wanted to know about sports (and kitchen appliances), but were afraid to ask.”
I just voted for the Chinchillas song. Didn’t know until yesterday it was Bill’s band. Some of those other bands are pretty good too. I’ve been an alt-country/Americana guy since discovering The Jayhawks in the early ’90s. Let me clarify, I didn’t actually “discover” the Jayhawks, but I read an article about them in some music magazine, bought “Hollywood Town Hall,” and the rest is history.
I want to say that, when you first mentioned the band’s name, I thought they sounded familiar, but I really don’t know for sure if I had heard of them or not.
One of my best friends graduated from Geneseo in ’89, then lived in Rochester for a few years after that, so who knows? Maybe I saw them playing some bar when I went to visit him.

Well, we’re playing tonight at Abilene downtown. I’m guessing not many people will show, since there’s a freaking blizzard outside right now.
Most coffee decanters will spill because of the design of the spout, the trick is not to pour like your’ under the gun at Starbucks, just take your time.
As for dishwashers, the Bosch series is top rated ( i know because the Kenmore in the kitchen is making noise, and I’ve been researching those, and I can either replace the motor assembly myself, or get a new dishwasher).
As for disposals, you’re better off composting all the remains instead of gumming up your pipes, but if you have to get one, go for the highest hp you can.
Casey – Bilas’ comment was in context of players going to major cities and banding together to win a championship. LeBron and Bosh going to Miami, A’mare, Carmelo and the talk of Chris Paul potentially going to New York. Now the talk is if Deron Williams is going to stay in New Jersey – who are the Nets going to bring in to pair with him.
He commented on the friendships today amongst players and not the rivalries that you saw back in the day. Can you imagine Magic and Larry just saying, “Hey let’s go to Detroit with Isaiah and see how many championships we can win” ? The thought makes my stomach turn.
Regarding the Celtics..I heard an interesting take on the trade this morning. The make up of the East is such that only one team really has a dominant center – Orlando. More teams are getting out and running – the Celtics felt they had to respond and adapt.
Chas – you are right. Ainge is considered to be a fairly shrewd GM. Although until the Garnett and Ray Allen trades – everyone in Boston thought he was an idiot. Amazing what a championship will do for you.
Chas – I actually think what the Red Sox did with Carl Crawford could become more of the norm. In fact, I wonder how much is done already by other teams that we don’t even know about it.
Companies run back ground checks, credit checks and run fingerprints on their employees. They only spend $30-40,000 a year on the average employee. MLB has guys making millions in a season and it is guaranteed – I can see teams wanting to know everything about their investment. Is it creepy? Yeah. Understandable? Yeah.
Boston is a great city and can afford to pay its players. Players are never going to stop coming to Boston – same with New York. Boston is already a double edge sword to play in because of a crazy fan base and tough media outlets. You either sink or swim in Boston, very similar to New York. If you sink… it is miserable. Just ask Edgar Renteria. But even the Sox have financial restrictions and I think they are being very careful about any player they are going to invest a 6 or 7 year contract in.
As for my Burnett comment – he is a flake and yeah, he was before he came. 🙂
Alright, come on guys, let’s step it up. The last thing anybody wants is for Wally to return from vacation and to think the Pine can’t survive without him. So, here goes…
What should be the topic of the day?
Adam Wainwright’s season-ending injury? https://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/spring2011/news/story?id=6154112
Red Sox Spygate? https://sports.espn.go.com/boston/mlb/news/story?id=6148268
The Lane Kiffin investigation? https://espn.go.com/blog/sec/post/_/id/20226/kiffin-not-vols-real-target-for-ncaa
Any of a number of trades in the NBA? https://espn.go.com/nba/
Surely, there’s some topic here we can over-analyze and bludgeon to death. What do you say, guys? That means you too, Smitty. 🙂
Chas – HELMET STICKER! YOU DA MAN!

Bill,
We need to talk. I got to get a new coffee maker. Can you throw a brother a line?
New hot topic to discuss: Celtics trade of Kendrick Perkins…not a popular move in this town.
I like that trade from the Thunder’s perspective. Durant, Wetsbrook and Perkins – that is a solid trio if Perkins can stay healthy.
Come to think of it -that’s a win win. Green compliments the Celts’ lineup.
Whhaddya think Smitty?
so the Rockets must be in rebuilding mode huh? They trade Battier and Brooks?
Gerald Wallace for three players and two first round draft picks?
I can’t remember a crazier NBA trade deadline.
Remember when Kemba Walker was the runaway POY candidate.
I am a little puzzled by the Kendrick Perkins..Obviously the Celtics know something or are they starting to retool on the fly?? They are showing a lot of faith in Shaq, Garnett and Krstic to stay healthy and provide serious rebounding.

Chas – it may have an effect here or there. Kinda like Grienke not going to the Yankees. Although, that might be more him than the Yanks.
I’ll second the Cuisinart recommendation, Casey. I think this is the one we have:

The Bears gave Lovie Smith a 2 year extension??? Wally – is that you hear I screaming??
Wally? Who’s Wally?
Smitty – URI at Bonaventure next Saturday – 2 pm.
Casey – you suggesting another road trip to Olean?? Let me think about it since we go to Atlantic City the following weekend.
Somebody call Kenny Loggins!!
Does anyone else wonder what Mark McGwire is thinking every time Cam Newton declares he is not going to talk about the past?
How about that block of LeBron? I could watch that replay all day. And to follow it up with a missed last shot makes it even better.
