By Paul Casey Gotham
It is that time again. Let’s hear from you readers. We had another week of stellar performances. Pick the ONE (1), UNE, UNO from January 31st-February7th that stands out to you, and tell us a story.
Brian Gionta grabs my POTW.
The Rochester, New York native netted all of the Montreal Canadiens goals in a 3-2 shootout victory over the Washington Capitals last Tuesday. Trailing 2-0 in the second period, Gionta tallied twice to tie the score.
Gionta followed that with the only shootout goal of the contest.
In his ninth NHL season, Gionta has 199 goals and 187 assists.
Who gets your POTW?

Okay …. I’ll be Captain Obvious (again), and go with Aaron Rodgers, the NFL’s best QB. No running game to speak of and you know they’re coming after you. He played HUGE in a HUGE chan’ship game. A GREAT performance! What else can you say? …. Besides “Brett Who?” 🙂
Chas says
I guess it turned out to be an FU Favre Super Bowl, after all.
Casey says
Wally – many thanks for gracefully accepting your leadership role. 🙂
Wally says
Thanks, Casey. Whatever I can do for the team … 😉

I am nominating the 16th hole at the TPC Scottsdale for the Performance of the Week. Part of the Waste Management Phoenix Open, the 16th hole is one of the best scenes in all of golf. Stadium seating all the way around the hole, the crowds are loud after each shot – either cheering or booing.
A fun atmosphere that saw a hole in one. There was another near hole in one by Billy Mayfair – while wearing a Pat Tillman jersey. The place went absolutely nuts. On Sunday, Phoenix Open winner Marc Wilson wore a cheesehead to show his allegiance.
A great atmosphere for golf.

One of the best superbowl of all time. So happy packers got it.
Wally says
Smitty … you nominated a golf hole for crissakes! A golf hole.
What’s next … the north endzone goalpost at Lambeau??? The ivy at Wrigley??? Second base at Fenway???
Sheeesh.
Chas says
Helmet sticker for Wally!!!
Chas says
Wally, Smitty will never nominate an inanimate object from a sport as relevant as baseball or football. He might, however, nominate the ball washer on the 18th hole at Augusta, or Phil Mickelson’s golf cart. It’s all part of his effort to annoy the heck out of us…or me…I have to admit that I’m pretty sure my constant needling of his POTWs is what drove him to this.
Anyway, I nominate Wake Forest baseball coach, Tom Walter, who donated a kidney to one of his players last week: https://www.thepostgame.com/features/201102/wake-forest-baseball-coach-donates-kidney-player-suffering-rare-condition

Although this is late, this is pretty funny (well, funny if it didn’t happen to you) – https://www.cnn.com/2011/SPORT/football/02/08/super.bowl.seating/index.html?hpt=T1
Wally says
Chas —
I could be mistaken, but I’m pretty sure that gifting a kidney is against NCAA rules and there will be sanctions levied against Wake Forest.
All kidding aside, I heard about that on ESPN radio this morning … that coach deserves POTYear!
Lastly, thanks for the HS 🙂
Smitty says
Wally – I find it comical that you are setting the guidelines for who or what is nominated for the Performance of the Week. Especially since you haven’t been able to follow them now for a couple of years. It is like Brett Farve instructing teenagers on using better judgment when texting.
Chas is right – I am doing it to because of him. It started out partly because by the time I would get in here, you had nominated just about everyone – including their agents for the Performance of the Week.
Who knows – next week I might nominate the Bermuda grass at Pebble Beach. Come the week of the Masters, I might just nominate the azaleas. Heck I might even nominate Ricky Fowler’s tailor. I am going to have fun with it – every week. Or until Chas sends me a notarized letter telling me to stop. 🙂
Smitty says
All joking aside – I agree with Chas’ nomination.
Wally says
I feel the need to address the jury for my own account. For the record and under oath, it is plain for all to see that I said nothing about “guidelines”. And also for the record, I believe I followed the “widely accepted guidelines” this week (Aaron Rodgers) and last week (da Bulls).
All you have to do is read, Smitty, it’s not that difficult. Well … for most.
I have no further statements and hereby rest my case … unless of course there are rebuttals and final arguments. 🙂
