It is that time again. Let’s hear from you readers. We had another week of stellar performances. Pick the ONE (1), UNE, UNO from January 17-23rd that stands out to you, and tell us a story.

Greg Logins gets my POTW.

Facing the Metro-Atlantic-Athletic-Conference-leading Iona Gaels with one of the premier power forwards in the country, Greg Logins turned in a career performance.

The senior forward scored 30 points and led the Canisius Golden Griffins to a 75-73 triumph in MAAC action, Sunday.

Logins had 22 second-half points hitting 8 of 10 from the field including four from behind the arc as Canisius rallied from a four-point half-time deficit.

From the inside and the outside, Logins opened the second stanza scoring the Griffs’ first seven forcing the Gaels out of their 2-3 zone and into half court man-to-man pressure. Logins knocked down a foul line jumper on the first possession of the half a and then followed with a three in transition. One possession later, Logins won the battle for a loose ball in the paint and finished off the glass.

Iona switched defensive pressure. It didn’t matter.

With Iona’s Michael Glover in full pursuit, Logins continued his torrid pace nailing two more from long range before going into the post, sealing Glover and finishing off a lob into the paint.

Earlier this season, Logins became the 30th member of the Canisius 1,00o point club. Logins now has 1,122 career points. The senior from Sodus, New York ranks sixth in Golden Griffin history with 684 rebounds.

How about Texas Longhorns player J’Covan Brown. The 6’1″ guard, averaging 9.8 points this season, came off the bench at Kansas and scored 23 points to upset the Jayhawks. That win snapped Kansas’ 60+ game winning streak at home.

    Great call.

How about the Toronto Blue Jays, for unloading that terrible Vernon Wells contract on the Angels, and getting a couple halfway decent players in return.

I almost forgot…I also nominate “Major Mika” Koivuniemi, who bowled a 299 in the semi-finals and a 269 in the finals, to win the PBA Tournament of Champions this Saturday in Las Vegas.

The Green Bay Packers have co-nominated Lovie Smith & Mike Martz for making it pretty easy for GB to win the game. In their press release, the Packers cited the following contributions:

    a) not having the Bears ready to play defensively in the first half
    b) not knowing the 3rd string QB Hanie is worlds better than the awful Todd Collins, thereby wasting the entire 3rd qtr
    c) for totally screwing up the late 4th quarter drive by the Bears by calling a timeout while they were in the process of gaining a 1st down and then taking that time to devise a totally ill-advised pitch sweep or whatever that was and losing 4 yards.
    d) not having any confidence in your GREAT placekicker to boot a 49 yarder … twice!

In addition to game balls, the Packers will award Smith and Martz complimentary Super Bowl tickets and a lifetime invite to their annual Christmas bash.

Going with Martin Kaymer and his impressive win at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship. His dominating win propelled him to replace Tiger Woods as the #2 golfer in the world… for now.

Wally – that 3rd down end around, was some of the worst offensive play calling I have seen in a long time. The way the Bears were moving the ball – Martz decides to get cute? He basically made Hanie’s job that much harder.

YES, SMITTY, I KNOW!!! Really shot ourselves in the foot with that one. 3rd and 2 at that spot on the field. Two off-tackle runs surely gets a first down. In fact, that’s the play they were running (for a 3 yrd gain!) while the ill-fated, wasted time out was being called from the sideline. Doh!
