(Webster, N.Y.) Dave Brust’s Webster Yankees have made a living out of their final at bat. The pinstripes won their first three games of 2010 campaign with their final chances at the plate. Webster’s string of good fortunes stopped Sunday.
Corey Goeggleman (Waynesburg State) stood ninety feet from home plate, but the Webster designated hitter was left stranded as the Geneva Red Wings beat the Yankees 3-2 in New York Collegiate Baseball League action at “The Basket.”
James Heine (Georgetown) worked one frame for the win while Andy Mix (Toledo) and Max Casper (N.Dakota St.) led the Red Wings with a pair of hits. Geneva pasted single runs on the board in the fifth, seventh and ninth for the victory. Geneva starter, Kevin Dooley (Pittsburgh), limited the home nine to three hits and two base on balls through seven.
Webster scored a run in the seventh. Tyler Grogg (Toledo) led with a bunt single and stole one of his three bases on the afternoon. Wes Winkle (Ball State) plated with single just inside the right field foul line. The Yankees added a run in the eighth. Heine greeted Monte Marrocco (UMass-Lowell) with inside pitch off the thigh. Matt Delewski (Toledo) advanced the runner with a sacrifice bunt. One out later, Matt Boulter (So. New Hampshire) singled to right center and Marrocco knotted the game at two.
Geneva loaded the bases in the ninth. Marcus Way (Harvard) worked a base on balls for the eventual winning run.
G.C. Yerry (Stony Brook) struck out six and walked two in his first start for the Yanks.
Webster scored eight runs in the bottom of the ninth to defeat Elmira Wednesday. Friday, Webster plated five in the home half of the eighth to erase a three-run deficit and beat Niagara, 5-3. Delewski’s walk-off single inside the third base bag scored Winkle as Webster nipped Allegany County, 1-0.
With the loss, Webster falls to 3-3 on the season. Monday, the Yankees host a doubleheader with the Alfred Thunder. First game is slated for a 6 p.m. start at “The Basket.”
