Who Am I? | April 7, 2010

****Remember, try this without research. Make like Wally, and let your inner James Joyce come out into the open.

I started 187 of the 984 games I played in my 13-year career. How many guys do you know that can start that few a number of games and average 12 points for an entire career? Better yet, how many do you know that started that few a games and had his number retired? That’s me. I guess they wanted to reward me for my last-second shot in game five of the 1990 finals. I earned myself a nickname. I did not give myself a nickname. I earned mine in the best way possible: an opponent gave it to me. Yeah, my ability to come off the bench and get the offense going caused a rival to compare me to a kitchen appliance. He could have called me much worse. We were not exactly liked too much. My team was definitely not known as a group of guys wearing white hats. You could say we used some rough methods to win our games and championships.

Early ’90’s champions that weren’t well-liked? Hmmm. Sounds like those Bad Boys from Detroit. Now, a kitchen appliance that heats things up fast … gotta be the microwave. Casey … is it Vinnie “The Microwave” Johnson???

Saw Wally’s answer and now I realize why the name Vinny Del Negro kept popping into my head, even though I knew it was not the right answer. Did not know Johnson had his number retired! First lines made me think it was Hondo, though he averaged better than 12 ppg I believe.

    Pete —
Hondo was the first guy that crept into my mind too until I saw 13 years … I figured his career was quite a bit longer than that. Of course, 1990 and the bad image gave it away.

Pete – great job chiming in.

I considered not including the year of the championship (1990).
