****Remember. Try to answer this without research.****
I attended a college that currently has 14 former players in the National Basketball Association. Not many schools have that many in the Association. Some of those guys were my teammates. I am not one of them to play in the NBA. All time my alma mater has graduated 75 guys to NBA. I never could lay claim to that honor. Former players from my school have gone on to win NBA championships. They have been MVPs, All-Stars, Hall-of-Famers. You name it. We kind of like to think that we are THE program. I did play on one of my school’s five national title teams. I averaged five and half points for that team. They have won one since then. With all that fame and everything, I guess there is just one thing that separates me from everyone else. It was kind of infamous you might say. It was the night we made the trip along I-85 to the house of our biggest rival. It was that night where I etched my mark in the annals of history. It started rather simple. I was shooting a free throw when the student section under the basket sat down and one “crazy” stood up wearing just his skivvies. Yeah, I was at the line when “speedo man” became a part of college basketball history.
Who am I?
Crossword Pete says
I’m guessing a G-town Hoya, but got me. I should know where I 85 is, but I can’t put a finger on it. Is I 85 in New England. Is this UConn?
Wally says
I’m thinking the school in question is North Carolina, the game in question was against Duke (the “Cameron Crazies”). But I have no idea when the “Speedo man” incident happened. I was gonna say that the UNC player was Roy Williams, but Casey would’ve given a clue to this person being a coach. Plus, I think the Speedo incident happened after Roy’s playing days. So it could be any rather non-descript guard or small forward who won a chan’ship, but did not make the NBA. Somebody else will have to help finish this one off … otherwise I’ll have to research, which is a no-no.
Wally says
After further careful reading of Casey’s clues, this person was definitely a member of UNC’s 2005 national chan’ship team. UNC has won five titles … the 4th one came in 2005. That team had Sean May, but I can’t remember who the 5 ppg player is. Can anyone???
Note: “THE program” is really Kentucky … the all-time winningest team and owner of 7 national titles. UNC is up there though.
Crossword Pete says
Geez, I think your right Wally. I 85 is in NC. I traveled it numerous times while my daughter was at UNC grad school and my son-in-law at Duke law. Oh well, fading memories.
Crossword Pete says
I’m going with Brian Davis of UNC.
Crossword Pete says
Is there even a Brian Davis? there were 2 guys unrelatedbut with ame last name on the Duke repeat national championship team with Laettner and Hurley and Hill and Antonio Lang.
smitty says
Brian Davis was a Dukie. Pete, you are thinking of Thomas Davis and Brian Davis. As for my answer I am going with Jeff Lebo from UNC.
Jeff says
Based on the clues, I would say someone from UNC but i have no idea who it is
Casey says
Helmet stickers all around for the discussion. Pete and Wally, I enjoyed the volleying as you started to figure out this one.

Never heard of Jackie Manuel. However, great clip. Casey at least will get this, but I especially liked the “Mullet Man”‘! Glad to have contributed to the volley. I knew Davises were Dukies, but got caught up in I 85 being in NC.

Definitely knew the reference right away as they did a special on “Speedo guy” a couple of months ago on ESPN (Outside the Lines maybe?). Wish I had seen this earlier. It’s 10:00 on Friday. I avoided all sports sites yesterday as I recorded the SU game and didn’t want to find out the outcome. Needless to say, I was quite disappointed around 5:30 yesterday when I had to fast forward through the debacle that occurred between the 11:00 minute mark and the 4:00 minute mark. I couldn’t watch!!
