Pigskin Playoff Picks

Time for the bench to opine on this week’s playoff games.   I like Boise State over Alabama.   Oops … sorry … was day dreaming about how great a CFB playoff would be.    Okay, onto the NFL Playoffs … the Saturday and Sunday wildcard round:

Jets at the Bengals:    If defense truly wins chan’ships, this is a good place to start and pick the Jets.    Pundits think they have the best D in the entire league and the Bengals seemed to have lost their way since the unfortunate passing of Chris Henry.   J! E! T! S!  JETS, JETS JETS win.

Eagles at Cowboys:    For once, Jerra’s team is on a roll at season’s end and D McNabb’s collar is really getting tight as it often does come playoff time.   Go with the ‘Pokes at home.

Ravens at Patriots:   This is simple … never bet against the Pats in a home playoff game.   Those Ghosts of Tuck Rules Past will always come back to haunt the opponent when the Pats need help.   Yes, I’m still bitter about that 2002 Oakland playoff snowfest.

The tuck rule's most infamous play: Patriots quarterback Tom Brady (12) fumbles in a playoff game in 2002 against the Raiders, but the play is reviewed and then overturned.

Time to move on though.  Pats overcome the loss of Wes Welker and win a tight one.

Packers at Cardinals:     I just think the Packers are taking this season more seriously than the Cards … plus, I bet a lot of the Wisconsin cheese-eatin’ snowbirds will travel to Glendale to create a home away from home for the green and gold.   Packers by 7.

So what does the bench think??   Enjoy the games!

I’ve got Bengals, Eagles, Patriots, Cardinals. Quick, random thoughts: Matt Sanchez will cost the Jets the game today. The phantom “3-peat” rule will not allow the Cowboys to beat the Eagles today. The Pats just don’t lose these types of games. Arizona didn’t play Kurt Warner last week against the Pack – Zona at home will be hard to beat.

    Time will tell….

Ummmmmm.. A little late on this, so I can only do 3..

I’m going with Cowpokes, Pats and Packers. Personally, I think the Packers are going to the Super Bowl.

As for the Bengals/Jets game.. Who would have thought that the Bengals kicker Shayne Graham would cause them the game.. Choke city!! I am shocked if they don’t release him tomorrow.. He can’t make a pressure kick.

    Me, that’s who 😉

In a simlar vein, hard to believe the Pats are being manhandled by the Ravens in Foxboro. I guess the loss of Welker has one-dimensionalized their offense, but wouldn’t a genius like Belicheck be able to figure something out?

  5. Casey says

    January 10, 2010 at 4:09 pm

Considering he has played a significant role in five Super Bowl wins, a ‘genius’ like BeliCHICK does not need to prove himself anymore.

Yep … telling Brady in 2002 to suddenly pull that ball in so the tuck rule would come into play and overrule that fumble was certainly a stroke of genius for Belijerk. (So we’re taking points off for spelling now?)

To the Pats, we have some nice parting gifts for the LOSERS … hope you enjoy the offseason … that was a LAME performance today. Geez … ya looked like the Bears!

    Wally,

Don’t you think it is time you get over that one? That happened against the Raiders. Right? Why so bitter? Is it some misplaced aggression? Like the fact that BeliCHICK’s defense kept Montana’s defense from winning three Super Bowls in a row.

Yep, it is about time. I have a problem with this type of thing though. Still bitter about ’93 (Florida State voted #1 over ND), ’86 the Mets coming back to win, ’70 something when the Blackhawks lost the Cup to the Habs in 7 games. Can’t help it … need therapy!

Oh … and Laettner’s shot to beat Kentucky. And YOU’re guilty of reminding me about that one. Just like that bad day at Xavier …

    ’93 Fla. St. I understand.
’86 Mets? I am not even bitter about that anymore.
Black Hawks losing to Habs? I understand.
Laettner’s shot to beat Kentucky? Your allegiance to Kentucky is a head scratcher – point shaving in the 50s, Rupp’s tenure, $100 handshakes…eek.
It is Kel who reminds you of that bad day at Xavier. I know Kel and me are one, but she is the one who verbalizes that reminder.

How is it that you picked up on the spelling mention so quickly when the performance of the week hints went unnoticed for months? Geez…Smitty left a trail of crumbs that rivaled Peter Brady’s efforts on the family trip to Hawaii.

It must have been the ALL CAPS 😉

Yeah well I’ve been doing that for a while. Seems as if BeliCHICK’s name is a spelling hurdle for many. 🙂

    Casey —
I forgot to mention the Bartman Incident for the Cubs in 2003. How could I forget that??

So why Kentucky? Well … I was just starting to get into CBB as a youngster back in the mid-late 70’s when Notre Dame went to it’s first and only Final Four. While ND was losing to Duke in the semi’s, Kentucky was beating Arkansas and then they went on to beat Duke when Jack Givens poured in over 40 points. So it was partly that UK won it all that year, partly that they beat the team that beat ND, and partly cuz I fancied myself a future sharp-shooting guard … like Kyle Macy. Then living in Kentucky during Pitino’s revival of the program in ’96-97 only strengthened my fondness for the Wildcats and CBB in general. That is one basketball-crazy place! Is that good enough for you???

    Wow Casey… 0-4….

  16. Dan says

    Chris…1-3…

  17. Dan says

Sorry if those are negative. I just jumped on after the weekend. A lot of people were probably surprised.

I hated the NFL this weekend until thank god I was saved by last nights game…

  18. Smitty says

Dan – I was pretty bad myself. 1-2 and would have been 1-3 if it had not been for me picking late.

Wally – you gotta let the Steve Bartman thing go.. Moises Alou went on the record a couple of years ago and said there was no way he could have caught that ball. Of course he waited for Bartman to be totured and run out of Chicago – but it is the thought that counts.. 🙂

What was shocking this weekend was that 3 teams were awful. Bengals, Pats and Eagles all looked terrible.

  19. Wally says

    January 11, 2010 at 11:11 am

But that’s two weeks in a row of looking terrible for Bengals and Eagles.

  20. Casey says

    January 11, 2010 at 11:41 am

McNabb looked like he spent the week watching footage of himself late in the second half of his only Super Bowl appearance. He had zero emotion.

  21. Casey says

    January 11, 2010 at 12:55 pm

Smitty – you can’t be bad when you participate.

  22. Smitty says

    January 11, 2010 at 1:31 pm

Wally, I could understand the first of the two weeks. The Bengals rested players in Week 17 and the Eagles pretty much did after the first half.

I am trying to decide if it was the Eagles playing poorly or the Cowboys just playing that well right now. Personally, I am leading towards the Cowboys playing that well.
