What a week of sports action. We have a number of performances with which to choose. Step right up readers and give us the one (1), uno, une performance that stands out for you this past week.
Ryan Miller grabs my POTW.
When the Washington Capitals came to town Thursday night, they brought with them a league-high 108 goals and Alex Ovechkin – the league’s second leading scorer.
Miller and the Sabres gave the Capitals nothing in a 3-0 triumph. The Sabre net-minder made 35 saves including 13 in the third period for his fourth shutout of the season and 16th of his career. Miller made a pair of spectacular saves in the final stanza. First, he took away an open-net opportunity from Brendan Morrison. Miller also gloved a Niklas Backstrom shot with less than 10 minutes remaining.
Miller’s four shutouts tie him for the lead league. The native of East Lansing, Michigan also leads the league in goals against (1.83) and save percentage (.939).
Nathan Gerbe notched his first career NHL goal. Steve Montador and Henrik Tallinder added tallies as the Sabres halted the Caps’ six-game winning streak. The shutout was the first in eleven months for Washington.
Who gets your POTW?
Wally says
Xavier hoops … for the double OT win over archrival Cincinnati !!
The Colts and the Saints … for continuing to give football fans excellence week in and week out.
Mark Ingram, the latest Heismann Trophy winner and first one ever from Alabama. Gee, that’s hard to believe.
Mark says
Ryan Miller has been outstanding for the Sabres this season, and i dont know what they would do without him. He is the starting goaltender for the eastern conference if you ask me.
Casey says
Mark – no doubt Miller is the best goalie of the eastern Conference – maybe the MVP of the NHL right now. Where would the Sabres be without him? I was expecting you to nominate Rick Jackson as your POTW.
Opey says
I’m confused. Are we supposed to only nominate one POTW? Or are we supposed to pick from Wally’s list? It says to pick one POTW for the week. Can someone please explain. Thanks. Maybe I can get Aunt Bea to make you a pie.
Boog says
How about Dan Sexton of the Ducks? Three weeks ago I saw him skating circles around the Alaska Aces in the ECHL(sorry Wally, this is the year of the Condor). Now he’s skating circles around his team mates in Anahiem and showing them how to hustle and put the puck on net. Granted he has gotten some goals that should have been stopped, but he hasn’t lacked in the hustle department.
Smitty says
Ahhhhh.. Wally took all of mine and now I don’t have anything say.
This sucks!!
Casey says
Boog – great call!!!!
Smitty – don’t give up so easy. If you give into the monopoly, it will only continue. Do a POTW some justice and give us some background on it. Give us something more than one sentence.
Smitty says
Well, after time to recover and think about it.. I am going with the San Francisco 49ers. Stay with me here.. Specifically I am going with core group of Alex Smith, Vernon Davis and Frank Gore. Smith – who many had written off as another QB bust, started the year off on the bench and came in for an ineffective Shaun Hill and has taken complete control of the position. Against the Cardinals he was 18-35 for 200 yards and 2 TDs. Frank Gore ran for 167 yards and TD, while Vernon Davis is turning into the star Tight End that everyone thought he would be .
More importantly Mike Singeltary is looking more and more like a star coach in the NFL . I don’t think this 49ers team is good enough to be a .500 team and he has them right there. By all accounts, they should have beaten the Vikings earlier in the year, except for another Brett Farve miracle.
As NFL teams go through their search for a coach this off-season – many of the same teams had a change to hire Singeltary and passed (Redskins). Think those teams are regretting that decision?
Casey says
Smitty – happy to see you recovered. Good call.

Good call, wrong week. This is POTW ended Sunday 12/13. This game was too late!!! Had to get you on a technicality 😉
Okay, jk … lighten up … just trying to have some fun!
For what it’s worth, your 49er comment is indeed a great call! But the Cards are gonna have to try not to turn it over a ZILLION times … but credit to the Niners who absolutely blasted the ball carrier on a couple of those.
Smitty says
Hey Wally McFly..
If you hadn’t mentioned every performance, I wouldn’t have had to borrow from this week. Technically it was still Week 14 football.. 🙂 By the way Johnny Raincloud bowled a 289 up in Bigfork, MN – do you want to amend your list??
🙂
Lighten up? I have been bustin’ on you for weeks about this! 🙂 Hello, McFly!!
