Another week of great sports action, and so many great performances with which to choose. Step right up readers and give us the one (1), uno, une performance that stands out for you this past week.

The Iowa Hawkeyes earn my POTW.  Or, actually the Iowa Hawkeyes offensive unit earned my POTW. For 55 minutes Saturday night, the Big Ten match up between the Hawkeyes and the Michigan State Spartans yielded a grand total of 15 points. Iowa led 9-6. Then the Spartans took over with 2:56 remaining and drove 60 yards – including a precision execution of the hook and ladder – to take the lead, 13-9.

With 1:37 remaining the Hawkeyes undefeated season hung in the balance.  Iowa took over on their 30. Ricky Stanzi hit Marvin McNutt for 15 yards. After a short rush and an incompletion, Stanzi connected with Trey Stross for 21 yards.  Stanzi then hooked up with Derrell Johnson-Koulianos, and the Hawkeyes had possession at the Spartan 15. After three incompletions, Stanzi hit McNutt on fourth down as time expired. Hawkeyes win 15-13.

With the win, Iowa preserved their first 8-0 start in over 100 years of Hawkeye football.

Who gets your POTW?

Here’s a nomination for DOTW (Dog of the Week): Unfortunately from my POV, it’s unquestionably the Chicago Bears. Forget the Monsters of the Midway …. what an embearassing performance by the Windy City Wimps. Not sure it was possible to look totally unprepared to play an NFL game early in the season … unless you’re the Raiders … but DA BARES were exposed for all to see … an organization that’s missing both brains and tenacity. For crissakes, the coach’s name is Lovie … get rid of him and the entire coaching staff. Back up the truck and start over!!!

    Wally,

I was feeling your pain yesterday as I heard the game reports. Look on the bright side…your draft status should be high. Oh wait, that’s not good either; there are too many awful teams this year.

I am going with Terrence Cody of Alabama who blocked not one – but two field goal attempts in Alabama’s 12-10 victory over Tennessee.

The second block came with .04 seconds left to preserve Alabama’s undefeated season.

    Those blocks were great.
