Wednesday afternoon, Aaron Boone gave new meaning to the phrase – ‘warning track power.’
Yeah, Boone went 0-3 against the Chicago Cubs, and when the game was over his average stood at .000, but the Houston Astro first baseman grabs my POTW.
On March 26th of this year Boone had open-heart surgery to repair a cogenital defect in his aortic valve. Five months later, Boone returned to Major League Baseball.
The Astros organization deserves credit. “I’ve been blown away by how much they have been behind me, how much they supported me, how much they made this completely about me, I feel forever grateful to them by the way they have treated me,” Boone said. (ESPN)
Boone made a diving stop in the third to rob Jeff Baker of a possible double. He gave the ball a ride in the fifth, but it landed just inside the fence. Five months after open-heart surgery – ‘warning track power’ earns my POTW.
Who gets your POTW?

Good nomination, Casey. That’s a nice comeback story.
I’m gonna throw Ichiro’s name into the conversation. He just got his 2,000th MLB hit on Sunday. He’s the second fastest to 2,000 … doing it in 1,402 games. Al Simmons got #2,000 in 1,390 games, just 12 fewer. Of course Ichiro has another 1,278 hits in the Japanese major league that aren’t counted here. He’s also 5 hits away from notching another season with 200 hits, which would be his 9th consecutive season, which I think may break or tie another record. So far, an amazing career.
My second nominee would be a homer call … I’ll nominate the ND duo of Jimmy Clausen and Michael Floyd. Clausen hit on 15 of 18 throws for 315 yards and 4 TD’s … three of the TDs were to Floyd.

All great nominations. I am going with 16 year old Melanie Oudin who is taking the tennis scene by storm with her recent play at the U.S. Open. Not only has her run at the U.S. Open has been good for U.S. Tennis – it has also been impressive in how she has done, coming back from a set down in all 3 of her victories. Her takedown of both Maris Sharapova and Nadia Petrova were impressive.
Here is hoping the run continues..

Great calls with the nominations.
Ichiro is awesome.
I am trying to make sure I am in front of the television the for Oudin’s next match.

Interesting story about Oudin.
Seems she was booted from her Times Square hotel over the weekend. The 17-year old had only been booked at the Marriott through the first week of play since she didn’t think she had a chance to advance. Fortunately, Oudin’s travel agent was able to find her accomodations.
