I am not sure if everyone has heard/seen the news regarding the Memphis basketball season.. It appears that the Memphis Men’s Basketball team is going to vacate their 2007-2008 wins because of major recruiting violations – specifically Derrick Rose. Fortunately there doesn’t appear to be any postseason bans or scholarship restrictions.

I get the university is punished and they should be – I am fine with that. But where is the culpability for both the former coach and player? This was Coach Calipari’s second team and both schools have faced recruiting violations(UMAss and Marcus Camby). Where is the culpability for the coach? How does the coach walk away from this complete unscathed? I have a serious problem with that and if I am a Kentucky fan – I am a little concerned about the pattern that is beginning to rear its head.

And what about the player? This player knowingly had someone take his SATs for him. This isn’t a question of an incident where he wasn’t sure if a recruiter could or could not buy his dinner for him on a trip. We are talking about something that the player has to know is wrong. Heck if I could have someone taken my SATs – I would have gotten the smartest kid in my graduating class to take them and I could have gone to an IVY school. Derrick Rose milked a year’s worth of tuition and more from Memphis. Where is the culpability for the player? Why isn’t fraud charges brought up against him? If he walks away from it, other high school prospects are going to get the wrong message – ” If you plan on going for one year..maybe two, have someone take the SATs for you. You play in a major conference and then head on the NBA for millions.

Hopefully Memphis sends him a bill for his tuition and ask for full restitution. There has to be some culpability.

I’m gonna change the subject cuz the Memphis hoops scandals are covered now in a separate post.

Here’s my thoughts on Syracuse U. declaring that Greg Paulus will be their starting QB: 1) The former Duke hoopster is a great athlete if he can make this type of adjustment so quickly. Wow, 4 years off from football and he’s now starting at QB for a Big East team! Pretty good. 2) HOWEVER, this really can’t be good news for the Syracuse football program overall and long-term. If a guy can actually come into your D-1 program after not playing for 4 years and win the starting job, then your next best QB must be a walk-on and maybe the MVP from last year’s intramural flag football league.

Whatever the case, it’s interesting and I’m sure will sell tickets for the desperate Orange football program. I’m rooting for Paulus to do well for two reasons: it’s about time we saw Syracuse succeed again, and Greg’s hoops career didn’t quite end the way he had hoped. Here’s hoping that this becomes a great “comeback story”.
