Full disclosure: I am a card-carrying member of Red Sox Nation. I have been pondering my David Ortiz is on THE list response and I am trying not to be a freaking hypocrit. Quite the struggle…
PED’s are cheating. I don’t care if they were “all” doing them, its cheating. Big Papi looks to be a fraud and the Saux haters have cause to whine about our championships. However, I am puzzled by Big Papi’s delay in addressing this. He has shown himself to be a good man other than this situation. I have said for years that while it wouldn’t surprise me to find out Manny juiced up, Ortiz never seemed to have the usual steroid physique. I convinced myself that he was clean. I listened to him blast users this spring (suspend for a year!) and saw him constantly reaching out to the young and underprivaledged. He’s a good man- am I wrong on that? I admit to enjoying my ration of Theo’s kool-aid, but then other questions began to pick at me that I had chosen not to consider before. Why are any of these names coming out at all. The list was to be secret. What that list allowed for was a cleaner game for the future. Should that ananimity (sp) be better protected? Also, how many sources have the list, and should the leaker of these names not be prosecuted for releasing sealed documents? Do we really know that the names that are out in the public really are on the list? Is it time to just release all of the names on the list and say that nothing will be done against these players unless later tests show continued use? What does the leaker get for his/her troubles? Does Ortiz REALLY not know what he tested positive for? He is either the world’s biggest horse’s ass or a truly good guy getting a bad hosing by all who wrongfully identified him. Can it possibly be anything in between? And here I sit, trying to know the answer to this, and knowing that I probably won’t know the answer to any of this for many years to come. So, who’s next on the list?… and do I really want to know anymore?
Plus- right now the Saux are stinkin’ the joint out while the Yanks just keep pounding the cover off the ball. Has the bottom started to fall out? I’m starting to think that it is quite possible… I hope I am speaking a bit too early…

Muels – I am trying to make heads or tails of Papi’s delay in speaking about the positive drug test. Regardless of what he tested for – do I expect him to come clean? I think he will, so I am taking him at his word right now that he is trying to find out what he tested for. He is rumored to speak about the test tomorrow before the game. If it was for a PED then I will be one of the first to condemn him for it – but for now, I am giving him the benefit of the doubt.

I have heard in a few conversations on ESPN that the test in 2003 was for a wide range of things (i.e supplements, vitamins, steroids, etc. ). Some of the items that would have caused a failed test in 2003 would be legal today. So there is a part of me that is holding out hope – but that is all it may be – hope. For if it was a supplement that is legal now – don’t you think Papi would have already been at the podium proclaiming his innocence? I would tend to think so.

My bigger problem is the list. It is supposed to be confidential, but here we are now with more names being leaked. Why isn’t there more of an investigation as to who is leaking this information – because it is ruining baseball. I don’t agree often with Ken Singleton, but I think he is right in saying that the entire list should be publicized and just get it over with. That every 60 days a new name is being released and it is just ripping the scab off an old wound.

Also – I am stepping in for Theo Epstein and announcing that the John Smoltz era in Boston is over. Love the guy and he is a Hall of Famer – but when lefties are going 9 for 12 against you – well, you’re done. Sorry. Time to give someone like Michael Bowden a shot. Can’t hurt at this point.

By th way – who is advising Michael Crabtree? Mike Singeltary is your coach and you are threatening to sit out the season. That is going to go over well. I can see Crabtree finally signing that contract and Singeltary is standing over him say, “finish that signature and then are you are MINE!! “

Thank you for mentioning this Smitty. I have a question: when did rookies suddenly start making as much as seasoned veterans? Why aren’t these guys getting close to league minimum? Now you have guys holding out (I know this is not the first time some rookie has done this). But, it’s getting laughable.

I can’t stand this Crabtree guy. I realize he might be a super talent at the wideout, but who cares. He’s already acting WORSE than Chad JOHNSON and TO. If I was his QB, I’d leave one hanging in the midle of the field on a crossing route for him. How many guys want to de-cleat this fool? Players like Crabtree make me wish Bill Romanowski or Rodney Harrison were still in the league,

I am in agreement. As of a week ago, there were still more than ten unsigned draft choices.

Reynell completely agree with you and I know Roger Goodell is in agreement. Part of the new collective bargaining agreement will probably be a restricted rookie salary scale that will prevent teams from having to shell out $30+ million for guys that are completely unproven (see Jake Long, Alex Smith, Ryan Leaf, Matt Stafford, Brady Quinn, etc.), These guys have yet to play a down and they are paid as much as proven stars in the league. And a portion of those guys listed haven’t produced in the NFL.

I am all for reasonable salaries and then “getting paid” after you have been in the league a couple of years.

You have to question your holdout when future teammates are saying, ” He needs to get his butt into camp”.

Only five draftees left unsigned: Crabtree, Andre Smith (Bengals), Eugene Monroe (Jaguars), BJ Raji (Packers), and Aaron Maybin (Bills).
