NYCBL 7/27

July 27, 2009 by Paul Gotham 2 Comments

09mapIt all comes down to this.

Four days remain in the New York Collegiate Baseball League regular season, and like barley to homemade stew, the playoff race is thick. Six teams will slug it out for three playoff spots this week. Hornell clinched first. Niagara? The Power clinched last. In between, lies Brockport, Alfred, Webster, Geneva, Allegany County, and Elmira.

Today’s doubleheader at Basket Road Field could go a long way to deciding one of the playoff spots. For the locals, game one starts at 4pm. Out-of-town fans can listen in here. Make sure you are on hand as local favorites, The Chinchillas, pay tribute to our home-town brew – Genesee Beer.  Sing along at home during the ninth inning. Genny Beer – it’s an acquired taste.

Webster revived themselves this past week. After a nine-game losing streak, the pinstripes went 4-1 outscoring their opponents 40-14 in the process. The home nine topped Geneva 5-1 before squashing Brockport, 9-1.

No reason to stop there. Webster topped Niagara, 9-1. The pinstripes finished the week handing second-place Brockport another drubbing, 14-4.

Hornell represented the only blemish of the week as the Yanks left the tying run on third in the ninth – losing 4-3. Hornell spoiled ‘Take Your Dog To The Park’ day. Many thanks to our sponsors: Milk Bone Dog Biscuits and Alpo Dog Food. Has your dog a Milk Bone moment today? Crack open a can of Alpo dog food and let the drooling begin.

Casey – Nice sweep of Alleghany County last night. With that sweep does that put Webster in the driving seat for a playoff spot?
