NYCBL 6/22

June 22, 2009 by Paul Gotham Leave a Comment

NYCBLBy Paul Casey Gotham

The week started with Webster falling from grace. Through six games Yankee hurlers had allowed nine runs – only six were earned. Tuesday, Webster gloves committed five errors and the pinstripes fell to Hornell, 10-6.

Webster lost five of six to the Dodgers last year.

Things didn’t improve much on Wednesday. The weather forecast called for heavy showers. Brockport jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first. Webster rebounded when Matt Jacobs (UMass-Lowell) used Earl Weaver tactics and drilled a three-run blast to give Webster the lead in the third. The rain, in the form of sprinkles arrived in the fourth. Brockport tied the score in the fifth. Showers arrived. Logic suggested the game should be halted. Illogic took over and the Riverbats scored in the sixth when a single skipped off the wet grass to the fence. The game was called after the frame. Webster took the loss.

Thursday, Anthony Ciambue (Wilmington) held the Yankee bats in check for eight stanzas. Webster managed two runs in the ninth. It was a case of a little too little and a little too late. Niagara sent the Yanks home with their third consecutive.

Brian Pullyblank stemmed the tide on Friday with a gem. Nate Koontz drilled another game-winning hit. This time he walked off.

Koontz collected the first home run at Basket Road Field and two more RBI on Sunday as the Yanks downed Geneva, 6-2.

This week’s schedule:

Tuesday vs. Brockport 7pm

Wednesday vs. Geneva 7pm

Thursday @ Niagara 7pm

Friday @ Brockport 5pm

Saturday vs. Allegany County 7pm

Sunday vs. Alfred 1pm
