Bryan Gardner (Ithaca – Rochester/Webster) and Jordan Petraitis (Miami, Ohio – Rochester) were among 33 former NYCBLers chosen in the Major League Baseball draft.
In the 34th round the Cincinnati Reds chose Gardner with the 1,019 pick in the draft. The Cubbies took Petraitis in the 41st round with the 1,241 selection in the draft.
Gardner and Petraitis were teammates during the 2006 NYCBL season in the franchise’s first year when the team was known as the Rochester Royals.
Last season Gardner made 22 appearances for Webster fanning 37 and walking 13 in 26 innings of work. One of his more memorable showings came against eventual league champion, Elmira, when Gardner struck out the heart of the Pioneer order on nine pitches.
Gardner averaged 13.5 strikeouts per nine innings for the Ithaca Bombers this past season.
Petraitis hit .352 and garnered second team All-MAC conference honors for the Red Hawks. He hit .328 for the Royals during the ’06 season including five doubles, two triples, and twelve runs batted in.
Glad to see him go: Other NYCBL alum, Ashton Mowdy(Eastern Oklahoma) went in the 19th round to the Houston Astros. Mowdy had a 3-0 record versus Webster last season.
