With La Salle leading 46-43 with under five seconds to go, the onus was on Saint Louis to deliver. The Billikens did, knotting the game at 46-46 with 4.8 seconds to go and overtime all but certain. But Shanel Harrison was not having any of that, getting the ball on the inbounds and zipping the length of the court around Billiken defenders to launch a desperation heave at the buzzer – and sinking that attempt for three points and the 49-46 Atlantic 10 win at Tom Gola Arena on Wednesday afternoon.
Charlotte played all 12 of its healthy bodies, using an all-around team effort, and rode the back of its All-Atlantic 10 performer, Jennifer Hailey for a near triple-double, for a 71-54 victory at Saint Louis Sunday afternoon. Saint Louis improved to 8-11 overall and evened its A-10 record at 2-2. The victory was the Billikens’ fourth road triumph this season, one more than the past two years combined. SLU has four road wins for the first time since the 2008-09 Bills finished with five.
Holding Saint Louis to just 25 percent from the floor (14-of-56), the Saint Joseph’s women’s basketball team downed the Billikens, 69-38, Sunday afternoon at Chaefitz Arena. The Hawks, who improved to 12-5 overall and 3-0 in Atlantic 10 play, finished with three players in double figures, led by redshirt senior forward Chatilla van Grinsven’s (Helmond, Netherlands/Dr. Kippenberg College) 15 points and 10 rebounds.
Saint Louis trailed Northern Iowa by 20 points in the second half and rallied to pull within three late, but the Billikens eventually fell 73-64 Saturday in a non-conference women’s basketball matchup at Chaifetz Arena.
The win was the third road victory of the year for the Billikens (5-5), who last won three road games in a season during the 2009-10 campaign. Saint Louis produced just three road wins in the past two seasons combined.
