Keshequa’s season ends in regional rematch

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. — Junior guard Jadyn Trocki scored 37 points to lead Section VI champion Frewsburg, ranked No. 1 NYSSWA past Section V’s Keshequa (NYSSWA ranked Number 5) 57-43 in the Far West Class C Regional at Finger Lakes Community College on Saturday night.  The game was a rematch of last year’s Far West Regional, also won by Frewsburg on their way to the 2025 Class C State Championship.

When asked how the preparation for this year’s game compared to last year’s matchup, Keshequa Coach Pete Piraino (47th year at the helm of the Wildcats) said, “We thought it would be very different because they lost three starters from last year’s team.”

However, one of the two returning starters for the Bears was Trocki, a junior, who is being recruited to play at the Division 1 level.  Trocki controlled the game from start to finish from her point guard position despite Keshequa trying multiple defensive looks to limit her offensive prowess.

“She’s a great player,” said Piraino.  “We tried everything to stop her.”

The first quarter saw both teams trading baskets, which included six lead changes.  The Widcats were finding success down low as freshman Alicia Wood scored 5 points early on while Trocki was able to drive through the lane and score at the hoop for Frewsburg.

With Keshequa leading 9-8, Frewsburg ended the quarter on a 7-0 run to take a lead they would not relinquish for the rest of the game powered by a pair of 2 pointers by Trocki and Jaden Jimmerson and a triple by Trocki at the quarter’s end.

Trocki began the second quarter with another triple, but the Wildcats responded with a triple by Ryley Benner and a two pointer by Braelyn Isaman to pull within four points at 18-14.  It would be the last points Keshequa would score in the quarter as Frewsburg closed the half on an 8-0 run to take a 26-14 halftime lead.

Benner and Isaman scored the first four points out of the break to pull Keshequa within single digits but once again Trocki imposed her will on the Wildcats, scoring the next seven points on a drive to the hoop, a layup in transition and on a three pointer.  By the quarter’s end, Frewsburg opened a seventeen-point margin at 41-24.

The Wildcats were able to get open looks throughout the first three frames but could not finish.  “We just did not shoot well tonight,” said Piraino.

Facing an 18-point deficit early in the fourth quarter, the Wildcats found their scoring touch, going on a 15-4 run, again led by Benner and Isaman, to pull within seven points.  The highlight of the run was a slick inbounds play executed by Isaman, where she inbounded the ball off a Frewsburg player’s back and laid the ball in while getting fouled.  She completed the free throw to complete the old-fashioned triple.

But as the clock kept ticking down, Keshequa was forced to foul more frequently to stop the clock and the Bears converted 13-18 from the line in the fourth quarter; Trocki converting a perfect 8-8 in that span.

Keshequa began the game guarding Trocki man to man and later switched to trying to trap her after she crossed mid-court.  As the game progressed, they tried face guarding Trocki with a single defender and then added a second defender to face guard her in the final quarter, all to no avail.

“She just doesn’t miss,” said Piraino.

Frewsburg (20-4) moves on to the state semi-finals where they await the winner of Delaware Academy (IV) or West Canada (III) on Friday.

With both teams graduating only one senior starter, it was suggested to Piraino that a third meeting in the Far West Regional could be a reality following the 2027 season.

“It’s really hard to get this far,” said Piraino.  “We’ll just have to work harder in the off-season.”

Keshequa finishes at 23-2 on the season.  Benner led the Wildcats with 13 points, followed by Isaman with 12.  Riley Nageldinger and Wood contributed 9 each to round out the scoring for Keshequa.
