Jack Leasure Shooting and Skills Camp sub-regional preview: Honeoye Falls-Lima and Norwich face off for a spot in the state quarterfinals

One team is making its second state tournament appearance in five years. The other its first in 18 years. Honeoye Falls-Lima and Norwich (IV) are set to face off in Class A sub-regional action. Here’s the breakdown:

HONEOYE FALLS-LIMA COUGARS (15-8 / Monroe County IV)
vs.
NORWICH PURPLE TORNADO (17-2 / Chenango County / No. 15 NYSSWA)
Wednesday, Union-Endicott High School, 7:30 p.m.

How they arrived here: Honeoye Falls-Lima cruised past Palmyra-Macedon (44-33) and Newark (52-50) to advance to the Class A championship before falling to Our Lady of Mercy (54-35), earning at at-large bid into the state tournament. Norwich defeated Chenango Valley (48-24), Johnson City (61-49) and Maine-Endwell (64-52) to win their section and advance to the state tournament.

Scoring defense: Honeoye Falls-Lima (43.7), Norwich (42.4)

Trends: Honeoye Falls-Lima won four straight games before falling in the Section V Class A finals. Norwich enters winning nine straight games including the Section IV Class A championship, with eight straight double-digit victories.

Players to watch for Honeoye Falls-Lima: Shaye Angelo Sr. (24.6 PPG, four RPG, three STL/G, 53 3-pointers); Alysa Richards Sr. (7.8 PPG, 4.2 APG, 30 3-pointers); Sarah Smith Sr. (10 PPG, 11 RPG); Kamryn Burdett Sr. (7.3 PPG, seven RPG, two APG, 1.8 BLK/G).

Norwich: Emma Urgo Sr.; Brooklyn Burke So.; Brynley Ryan So.; Josey Ryan Jr.; Kerragan Reid So.

Coaches: Steven Willoughby (Honeoye Falls-Lima), Abby Flynn (Norwich)

History: HF-L last reached the state tournament in 2008 the end of a five-year stretch that included three final four appearances with the Cougars taking the 2005 NYS Class A title. Norwich fell to General Brown (III) in the 2022 state quarterfinals.

What’s at stake: A spot in the Class A state quarterfinals against the winner of Lake Shore and Our Lady of Mercy.
