Jack Leasure Shooting and Skills Camp Regional Qualifier Preview: Lyons and Honeoye to duel in Class C

One team is trying to make the Far West Regional for the second season in a row. The other is trying to do it for the third time in four years. Honeoye and Lyons will clash Wednesday night in a battle of Finger Lakes West and Wayne County. Here’s the breakdown:

LYONS LIONS (22-2/Wayne County/No. 4 NYSSWA Class C)
vs.
HONEOYE BULLDOGS (22-2/Finger Lakes West/No. 2 NYSSWA Class C)
Wednesday, Finger Lakes Community College, 7:00 p.m

How they arrived here: Lyons, the Class C1 winner, kicked off its postseason run with a 116-51 win over Red Jacket before beating  Bloomfield 90-47. In the semifinals, the Lions defeated  Gananda 72-58 and in the Class C1 championship they won 87-59 over Geneseo. Class C2 champ Honeoye rolled 68-20 over Arkport-Canaseraga in the first round before picking up an 80-46 win over Perry in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, the Bulldogs won 60-53 over No. 6 Notre Dame Batavia. The C2 title game saw Honeoye get past York 58-53.

Scoring offense: Lyons (82.8 PPG) Honeoye (69.4 PPG)

Scoring defense: Lyons (52.6 PPG) Honeoye (47.9 PPG)

Trends: Lyons has won seven straight games, and 17 of its past 18 games. The Lions have scored 87 or more points in five of their past seven outings. Honeoye is on a 14-game winning streak, 12 of which being double-digit victories.

Players to watch for Lyons: JJ Johnson Sr. (18.0 PPG, 12.0 RPG), Contrell Parker Jr. Sr. (14.4 PPG, 5.0 RPG, 4.0 APG, 3.0 SPG), Steven LeBrecht Sr. (14.3 PPG, 7.0 RPG), Jah Jah Smith So. (10.3 PPG, 4.0 RPG, 3.0 APG), Kaywon Butler So. (9.2 PPG), Stavell LeBrecht Sr. (5.0 PPG, 3.0 APG)

Players to watch for Honeoye: Landon Washburn Jr. (33 PPG, 10 RPG, 5 APG, 5 SPG), Dylan Washburn Jr. (13 PPG, 8 RPG, 3 APG, 2 SPG), Braiden Schneider Jr. (12 PPG, 4 RPG, 2 APG, 2 SPG), Kyle Schmitt So. (8 PPG, 6 RPG, 2 APG, 2 SPG), Eli Stumbo Jr. (4 PPG, 5 RPG, 1 APG, 1 SPG)

Coaches: Zac Young (Lyons), Robb Delisanti (Honeoye)

History 101: The two teams met back in January, with Lyons picking up a seven-point win on a neutral floor. With a win, the Lions would clinch a Section V-best 13th regional appearance and third in the past four years. It would make back-to-back trips for Honeoye after making it to the Far West Regional a season ago, and third overall appearance.

What’s at stake: A spot in the NYS Class C Far West Regional against Global Concepts (VI).
